Useful websites helping with touch typing
Below is a list of websites that help to teach touch typing. One site may be better than another for each individual learner. The last two sites in particular are helpful for those with poor eyesight.
If a client owns a PC/laptop at home, try to encourage them to practice using the website shown to them. To touch type to any level they need to practice, practice, practice!!
Some sites give you the option to choose the QWERTY keyboard – always select this as that is the standard keyboard used in the UK.
A site with 15 lessons, which can be chosen in any order.
You need to set up a username and password but nothing more – an email address is optional. Lessons can be skipped or repeated easily.
You need to register – an email address is required. So help from mentors will be needed with this. You cannot skip ahead to later lessons with this website, so for absolute beginners to touch typing.
This site uses large text so is great for those with poor eyesight. Again, lessons can be skipped/repeated. Go to the home page for further tests, etc.
Another site with large text.
Games to help improve your touch typing skills!
If someone is confident enough, these games can help hone their touch typing skills in a fun way. Not entirely recommended to those still learning as an individual may find the games frustrating if they cannot touch type yet.
The first two sites (and perhaps others as I haven’t fully tested them all) – when typing a few words at once e.g. “the cat sat…” the space key must be used at the end of the last word in order to progress further in a game. This becomes apparent when playing a game and just takes a bit of practice getting used to.
This site also includes lessons and tests. The games can be played at beginner, intermediate or advanced levels.
This website is the fourth in the list shown abovebut shows the games section of the site.
A variety of different games. You can also refer to the other sections of the website for lessons and tests etc. A couple of programmes can be downloaded under the “Typing Software” section to help touch type – they are safe and free. The best are the first two on the list.
A simple and straightforward game.
And finally….A game where you race against others!
PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!
