Open Day Planning

Open Days are one of the best opportunities you have to be able to gather information relating to courses and degrees for when you finish school. There are a lot of institutions out there all offering similar courses – so how do you know which one is right for you?

The best way to decide is to visit the institutions you might be interested in attending to research courses, facilities etc. You also have to get a feel for the place. No point wanting to go somewhere that does not make you feel welcome and you cannot see yourself spending up to 4 years there.

When you visit the institution, you have to ask lots of questions about their courses, prerequisites and fees.

Make sure you ask how you can pay – it is pointless to consider a course or institution if it will cost thousands of dollars in upfront fees that you cannot afford.

Some ideas of what you might need to find out at an open day:

  1. Courses available, and subjects to study within each course
  2. Prerequisites for the course – what do you have to study or know to be able to get in or do the course
  3. How do you apply for the course? ATAR, Direct Application, folio, performance etc.
  4. What subjects are mandatory within your course and which are electives?
  5. How much does the course or degree cost? How do you have to pay for this?
  6. What are the books, materials, equipment and tools required for the course?
  7. Contact hours of the course, and can you work at the same time?

Other things you might need to think about are:

  1. Transport and travel – how far is it, how long will it take, petrol costs, public transport
  2. Do you have to move out of home to be able to attend? Costs of living on res, etc.
  3. Are the lectures, info on line? Can you study in this manner? Is it too independent?
  4. Contact hours and working part time to support yourself.
  5. Clubs, organisations and groups run through the institution – there are great opportunities to get involved in the social life of an institution as well as the academic. Are there any that stand out for you?

You must attend one open day. It is compulsory and evidence of your visit must be supplied to your tutor teacher. Look at the Open Day Calendar. Decide which two or three institutions you are visiting, and draft a set of questions to ask. Once you have been to the Open Day, record you answers on the next page, and insert the evidence of how you found the answers.

Evidence can be signatures of people you talked to, brochures you picked up or photos of you at the institution. Make sure you keep all of the things that you collect – you will need to show them to your tutor teacher later on in the term.
