  • Is the access equipment suitable and sufficient for the task being undertaken?

  • Is the equipment in good condition e.g. clean, dry, free from substances/corrosion?

  • Has the equipment been erected in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction and by trained and competent personnel?

  • Is the equipment being used in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions?

  • Is work to be carried out over 2 metres high? If so, the equipment must comply with the requirements of the Construction (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1996.

  • Has suitable protective clothing been provided? e.g. suitable footwear, hard hats.

  • Is the user working alone? If so have appropriate precautions been taken e.g. means of communication?

Falling Objects /
  • Have adequate precautions been taken to alert others to the use of the equipment e.g. barriers and signs?

  • Have adequate arrangements been made if the equipment is being used near doorways/stairs/steps?

Manual Handling activities /
  • Has the user been instructed in the use of appropriate manual handling techniques?

Maintenance /
  • Have steps been taken to ensure the equipment is regularly inspected and maintained by a competent person?

  • Are maintenance and inspection records kept?

  • Are arrangements in place for worn or damaged ladders to be immediately removed from use and appropriately labelled?

Training, Information and Instruction /
  • Has the user been provided with the appropriate information, instruction and training?

  • Is electrical work involved? If yes refer to separate risk assessment

Security /
  • Have adequate precautions been taken to prevent unauthorised use of the equipment?
