Classroom Policies

Probity is the defining characteristic of this class. Probity means integrity and respect. Each person in this class will have integrity for themselves and respect for others. Specific rules are as follows.

  1. Students are responsible for arriving in class prepared to work. They will be in their seats, with all materials, and ready to work when class begins.
  2. Students are responsible for requesting assignments missed due to absences. They must copy the assignment information and gather any handouts from the assignment crate in the classroom.
  3. Late work will be accepted at a loss of 50% of points.
  4. Unexcused absences on assignment due dates will result in late work with 50% of points deducted. Excused absences on assignment due dates will result in work being accepted in direct proportion to the number of days missed. After that date, it will be late work. (You are responsible for this. I will not remind you.)
  5. No food or drink is allowed. Water is the only exception.
  6. No hats, sunglasses or grooming (make-up) is allowed.
  7. No cell phones, walkmans, or any other electronic device is allowed.
  8. No profanity.
  9. Every student has the right to an education. That includes you and the person next to you. If you disrupt the education of any person (by breaking a policy above or by disrespect/lack of integrity) you will face the consequences.

Consequences

Students are here to learn. To provide the environment for that education, simple and logical consequences will be applied to any student who needs them. If you disrupt the class in some way, the possible consequences are:

detention with me, detention with the school, referral to the AP office, a talking to after class, the evil eye (more on this later), a phone call home, or anything else that makes sense to me

Grading Procedures

Students will receive grades on all assignments according to a point scale. All points are the equal of all other points with major assignments simply being worth more points. Those points will be added up and compared to a percentage scale to find the grade the student has earned at the end of the term.

100-93% A / 76-73%C
92-90% A- / 72-70%C-
89-87%B+ / 69-67%D+
86-83%B / 66-63%D
82-80%B- / 62-60%D-
79-77%C+ / 59%-F

Your grade is wholly dependent on you. You can earn an A. All you have to do is try, and I will help you get there.

Final Word

US History is a wonderful story. We will explore it. We will start with the earliest Americans and race up to the Civil War, at which point we will slow down and spend most of our time in the Twentieth Century. You’ll love it! You’re going to work hard, you’re going to struggle, and at the end of the year, you will be proud of yourself.
