HEALTH CARE CAREERS

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Health Care Careers program is an active program designed to:

Introduce students to various health careers

Teach students the necessary skills, knowledge and attitude to obtain and maintain a job in the health care field

Prepare students for further education

Make the transition from high school to the work force

Classroom and lab instruction are combined with field trips as well as much time spent providing care in local hospitals and nursing homes.

Health care continues to be one of the fastest growing industries in the United States. Through the year 2014, there will be numerous new job openings in careers such as:

Nursing Assistants

Licensed Practical Nurses

Registered Nurses

Emergency Medical Technicians

Home Health Care Professionals

Pharmacy Technicians

The Health Care Careers program will provide students opportunities for certifications in:

Certified Nursing Assistant

NECESSARY PERSONAL QUALITIES

Employers are looking for the new health care employee to be:

multi-skilled and able to perform in a variety of settings

a team player

committed to helping others

able to communicate well

able to apply knowledge to those with varying diagnoses

able to work under pressure

Caring for a client frequently involves using complex monitors and equipment which requires the student to possess a high degree of manual dexterity and the ability to read and interpret technical information.

Additional personal qualities include ability to work within time constraints and to have emotional stability, and patience. The student is expected to be dependable, honest, and adaptable plus demonstrate physical stamina and exhibit a positive attitude at all times.

SCHOOL TO WORK OPPORTUNITIES

All qualified students will receive the following opportunities:

Level One

  1. job shadowing experiences at Grand View Hospital in more than 12 different departments
  2. community service via Nail Care at Belle Haven Nursing Home

Level Two

  1. direct patient care at Rockhill Mennonite Community and Lutheran Community at Telford
  2. local field trips to funeral homes and independent living facilities

Level Three

  1. job shadowing experiences at Grand View Hospital
  2. direct patient care at Doylestown Hospital

Enrollment in the Cooperative Education program and/or W.E.B.S. program is available to qualified students upon Instructor recommendation.

ARTICULATION AGREEMENTS

Most positions in health care require additional training/education to keep up with changes in technology or to advance into a post-secondary health career. Upper Bucks County Technical School has articulation agreements with:

Bucks County Community College

Gwynedd Mercy College

ORGANIZATION AFFILIATIONS

Enrollment in Health Care Careers will include membership in HOSA – a state and national career and technical student organization for students enrolled in the health science technology field. Membership will also be granted to SkillsUSA – another career and technical student organization. Participation in one or both of these fine organizations provide assistance in developing self-confidence and will enhance leadership skills and will also provide scholarship opportunities as well as state and national recognition. Community Service is strongly encouraged of all students.
