Nottinghamshire County Council Civic Service

Sunday 26th June at 3pm – Southwell Minster

The Chairman elect of the County Council has selected the Royal British Legion as his Charity for his year in office, which commences in May. He has invited Standard Bearers to attend the Service to form a “guard of honour” for the service. As the Chairman is supporting our organisation, the RBL County office would appreciate as many Standard Bearers attending from the County Branches as possible.

We realise that this is the Armed Forces Weekend, and some may be planning to attend Nottingham Castle over this weekend but we do not have confirmation yet that a Service will be held at the Castle or Market Square on either day of the weekend. Please advise the County Office if your Standard Bearer will be attending the County Council Civic Service by returning the tear off slip at the end of this Newsletter update.

Calling all Cricket Fans (and those who are not)

With less than three months to go until the Inter Services Twenty 20 Trophy (IST20), taking place at Lords Cricket Ground on Tuesday 28th June 2011 (the Legion being one of its nominated charities),

is this date in your diary. See attached flyer for more details.

As you are all well aware, the Membership has been left in the shadows for the past few years and never fully recognised for the work it does on behalf of The Royal British Legion. However, with new initiatives being put in place and, not before time, the much needed support cascading down from Head Office, I feel now is the time for us all to work together and show the world that the Heart of the Legion is The Membership.

So come and have a great day out, meet up with old chums and show your support for our Armed Forces of today, "Strength in Unity".

‘THE ABSOLUTE CHALLENGE’ 4 – 14 MAY 11

To mark our 90th Anniversary, “Absolute Challenges” (www.absolutechallenges.org) hopes to raise a minimum of £350,000 as a contribution towards The Royal British Legion Battle Back Centre.

Their aim is that 150 full time riders will cycle approximately 980 miles in ten days over the period 4 – 14 May 11 from Land’s End to John O’ Groats. They hope to gain the support of a further 2,000 daily riders who have a choice to ride one or more legs. The money is to be raised through sponsorship with each full time rider raising £1,000 and each daily rider raising £100.

The proposed schedule is:

Day 1 (Wed 4 May) Lands End to Liskeard 76 Miles

Day 2 (Thu 5 May) Liskeard to Tiverton 75 Miles

Day 3 (Fri 6 May) Tiverton to Gloucester 105 Miles

Day 4 (Sat 7 May) Gloucester to Shrewsbury 85 Miles

“Absolute Challenges” will be covering costs and providing the main administrative support (accommodation, feeding, medical etc). Additionally, they will offer participants membership of the Legion for a year and cover the costs associated with this.

This event also provides a great opportunity / platform for the Membership of The Royal British Legion to lend its support for such a worthy cause and promote the Legion, promote Membership and raise funds. Head Office has sanctioned the initiative.

Paul Osborne (Regional Publicity and Membership Officer – South) has been appointed the Membership Point Of Contact (POC) for that part of the cycle challenge taking part south of the Scottish Boarder (Days 1 – 6). He will be working closely with his RPMO colleagues in those other Regions where the challenge will be taking place. The RPMOs in turn will be linking in with the County Secretaries and Membership Administrators in the relevant Counties to co-ordinate the support which it is hoped will be forthcoming from the volunteers within Membership at both County and Branch level.
