1.  5th Grade Science EOG Support. Numerous resources are available on the CMS Elementary Science Wiki to help teachers organize their end-of-year review for the 5th Grade Science EOG. It is HIGHLY recommended to have students do a Mock EOG at least three weeks before the actual EOG. The suggested Mock EOG to take is on SchoolNet and is called “EOY Recommended Released 5th Grade Science EOG 2016” #1029363, student code MA6XU9J. The “WWWD?” just-in-time suggested review activities will be posted on the Elementary Science Grade 4/5 Listserves.

2.  Discovery Education TechBook Summer PD. We are planning to offer three levels of Discovery Education TechBook for Science PD on June 14 and 15 to up to 250 teachers. There will be Getting Started with DE TechBook, Spotlight on Strategies – Ways to Engage Students with Media, Digital Storytelling Made Simple – Paper Slides, and Read, Write, and Think Like a Scientist. Look for more details soon to be shared on the Listserves.

3.  PreK-5 Elementary Science Institute. Save-the-Date August 4th for our first ever, PreK-5 Elementary Science Summer Institute. The event will be at Endhaven from 8:00-3:00 and will feature presentations and breakout sessions for every grade level facilitated by master science teachers in the CMS Science Leadership Cohort.

4.  2016-2017 CMS Elementary Science Leadership Cohort. This team of 30 CMS teacher-leaders will receive up to 50 hours of targeted PD during the 16-17 school year to help nurture and support elementary science initiatives in CMS. There has already been a First and Second Call post to the listserves to give teachers an opportunity to apply to be a participant in the cohort. A third and final call will be posted the week of May 2nd. Here is the link to the survey that teachers need to complete to be considered for the cohort.

5.  Competitions and Contests! Science Olympiad-It’s Elementary will be Saturday, May 21st at UNC Charlotte. We have nearly 50 teams that will compete this year. The First Annual AutoBell Car Wash Creek Challenge will be Saturday, June 4th at UNC Charlotte. Nine CMS elementary schools will participate. Congratulations to the 3rd grade team at Matthews Elementary that earned an Honorable Mention in the Dupont Writing Challenge, a national contest that integrates science concepts with writing skills.
