Disability Accommodation Statement:

The University of North Texas is on record as being committed to both the spirit and letter of federal equal opportunity legislation; reference Public Law 92-112, The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended. With the passage of new federal legislation entitled Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), pursuant to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, there is renewed focus on providing this population with the same opportunities enjoyed by all citizens. Students must follow the Procedure for Requesting Special Accommodation, as indicated in the UNT Policy Manual, Volume 3, 18.1.14, part II, which can be found at the following URL:

. According to these guidelines, "[w]ithin the first week of class, qualified students must notify the instructor or academic unit liaison for disability accommodation that options to standard methods of educational access will be needed" (part II, section B).

Student Behavior in the Classroom

Student behavior that interferes with an instructor’s ability to conduct a class or other students' opportunity to learn is unacceptable and disruptive and will not be tolerated in any instructional forum at UNT. Students engaging in unacceptable behavior will be directed to leave the classroom and the instructor may refer the student to the Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities to consider whether the student's conduct violated the Code of Student Conduct. The university's expectations for student conduct apply to all instructional forums, including university and electronic classroom, labs, discussion groups, field trips, etc. The Code of Student Conduct can be found at

Grading System:Grading Scale:

Participation10%A= 90 -100

Homework20%B= 80 - 89

Essays (2)20%C= 70 - 79

Exams (3)30%D= 65- 69

Final Exam20%F = 64 - 0

Grades are not curved.

Participation/Attendance: Consistent and informed participation is perhaps the single most important component of the learning experience. This involves preparing material ahead of time and thinking about the questions involved. Missing more than 3 classes for any reason will have a substantial negative effect on the grade: each subsequent absence will deduct one point from the final grade. Note that arriving late or leaving early will also affect the grade: two such occurrences count as one absence from class. Lackluster performance significantly lowers the participation grade. Take responsibility for your learning! Each student is responsible for reading, understanding, and following this syllabus.

In class activities& homework: Students will read and prepare for class. Students will answer short questions at the beginning of class time to ascertain their progress with the readings, homework exercises and discussions. Keep all your homework and other work filed and corrected. I will conduct random checks of your work. All in class activities and quizzes will be in this category. The lowest score may be dropped.

Essays: There will be two written formal essays. The grade will be based on the quality of analysis and comprehension, fluency of expression, grammar, and mastery of pertinent vocabulary.

Exams: There will be three exams during the semester. No make-ups are allowed without official documentation from a doctor or the university.

Final Exam: There will be a final exam on Friday May 11th at 10:30 a.m.

Outside help/ Academic integrity:Homework, compositions, and all assignments should be completed by the student independently. This means no help at all from technology or humans, except for in-class workshops. Cheating, plagiarism, and other examples of academic misconduct will be pursued and sanctions will be levied. More specifically, the student cannot copy others’ compositions or sentences from textbooks, the internet, etc. He/she CANNOT have another student, a tutor or friend/family CORRECT or TRANSLATE his/her work. The work should reflect the individual’s level of proficiency. Plagiarized work will result in a zero (0). For any specific questions about an assignment, please contact me during my office hours. See also UNT’s academic integrity policy:

(*All reading and homework assignments should be completed BEFORE class time.)
