A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Dr. Eli Cornett Boggs.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Dr. Eli Cornett Boggs, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs was born on April 14, 1909, a native of San Juan, New Mexico, and longtime resident of Hazard, Perry County, Kentucky, and he traversed these earthly bounds on January 7, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs was the loving son of the late Dr. James Preston Boggs and Sara Eversole Boggs; he was the devoted husband of Margaret Craft Boggs; and he was the loving father of two daughters, Peggy Yusk of Louisville and Betsy Hillenmeyer of Lexington, and a son, Eli Boggs, Jr. of Hazard; and he was the proud grandfather of nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs graduated from Hazard High School where he was an avid football player; and he graduated from the University of Kentucky and Middlesex Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts; and

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs was an esteemed member of the Perry County community where he delivered more than 10,000 babies during his forty year medical practice; through the years, he made many house calls in the rural community, many times receiving chickens, eggs, and preserves in lieu of payment; and

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs was named Hazard Man of the Year, he was honored at the 1994 Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center's Doctors' Day Dinner, and during Hazard's 1983 Black Gold Festival, there was a day designated as "Dr. Boggs Day"; and

WHEREAS, Eli Cornett Boggs was a charter member of the Kentucky River District Health Department and the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Family Practitioners; he was past chairman of the board of directors of Citizens National Bank in Hazard and he also was a former two-term Hazard city commissioner; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Eli Cornett Boggs has left a void that cannot be filled, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Eli Cornett Boggs, and extends to his family and many friends its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. The passion, dedication, intelligence, and social consciousness Eli Cornett Boggs brought to this Commonwealth will never be forgotten.

Section 3. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, January 8, 2002, it does so in loving memory and honor of Eli Cornett Boggs.

Section 4. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the family of Dr. Eli Cornett Boggs, 160 Woodland Avenue, Hazard, Kentucky 41701.
