A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor of Nelda Barnett upon her recent appointment to the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Board of Directors.

WHEREAS, it seems appropriate from time to time for this honorable body to reflect upon the contributions of special Kentuckians who have enriched the lives of so many people; and

WHEREAS, Nelda Barnett, a resident of Owensboro, Daviess County, Kentucky, deserves recognition and honor for her twenty-five years in the aging field, serving as director of the Green River Area Agency on Aging (AAA) where she was instrumental in expanding services to the elderly, and increasing an initial grant of $150,000 to an impressive $1 Million during her tenure as director; she has served as director of Christian Church Homes of Kentucky, Owensboro Campus, was in public relations and marketing for Lifeline Home Care, Inc., and was founder and director of the Voluntary Action Center; and

WHEREAS, Nelda Barnett has been recognized for her outstanding work with volunteers from the Department of Health and Human Services; she was the recipient of the Elizabeth Munday Award in 1998 for her outstanding work for senior citizens in Owensboro; she also was the recipient of the Thoroughbred Award given by the Kentucky Association for Gerontology for her work in the field of aging in 1996; and in 2000, she was sent to Vietnam by the Woman-to-Woman program to learn about Vietnamese women and their culture; and

WHEREAS, Nelda Barnett served as AARP state president of Kentucky, she currently serves on the Kentucky Commission for Community Service Volunteers, and she was twice elected a delegate to the White House Conference on Aging; she has earned repeated praise from her colleagues in the aging field, and because of her extensive knowledge and expertise, she was elected to a six-year term on the AARP Board of Directors at the 2002 National Leadership Conference;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body hails and salutes Nelda Barnett for her insight, vision, and compassion, and we hereby congratulate her upon her recently elected position on the AARP Board of Directors.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Nelda Barnett.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Ms. Nelda Barnett, 4601 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, Kentucky 42303, and to Mr. Robert Venafro, AARP, 601 E Street, N. W., Washington, D. C. 20049.
