A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Leonard "Scottie" Smith.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Leonard "Scottie" Smith, and we pause in silent reverence for his soul.

WHEREAS, Scottie Smith was born on May 2, 1921, a native of Frankfort, Franklin County, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds on March 22, 1998; and

WHEREAS, Scottie Smith was the adored son of the late Leonard A. Smith and Lena Riddle Smith; he was the devoted husband of Joyce A. Wheatley Smith; he was the loving father of a son, Melvin Smith of Frankfort; and four stepsons, Bob Peterson, Kevin Peterson, Chris Peterson and Ed Peterson, all of Louisville; and two daughters, Sandy Emerson of Lexington, and Nancy Smith Grand of Evanston, Illinois; and a stepdaughter, Lorie Johnson of Port Charlotte, Florida; and he was the proud grandfather of three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and

WHEREAS, Scottie Smith served his country with pride as a member of the United States Army during World War II; he was a former commander of the Civil Air Patrol; he was a retired pilot; and he was a member of the American Legion Post 7 and VFW Post 4075; and

WHEREAS, Scottie Smith will be remembered as an active and involved citizen, and a highly esteemed member of the Franklin County and Jefferson County communities; he was a retired labor leader, secretary-treasurer of the Kentucky AFL-CIO, and business agent for Distillery Workers Local 24, and he helped organize other plants for the Allied Industrial Workers; he was instrumental in creating the center for labor education and research at the University of Kentucky; he built union-owned housing for the elderly; he found employment for handicapped people; and he worked to strengthen ties with other unions; and

WHEREAS, his tenacious courage and conviction for the advancement of the labor movement served as a source of strength and encouragement for others; he was revered by his peers and unflinchingly gave of himself for the rights and needs of working people; and he served his fellow workers and the entire labor movement with dedication and distinction; and

WHEREAS, the passing of Scottie Smith has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and he is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body does hereby express its profound sense of sorrow upon the passing of Scottie Smith, and extends to his family its most heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. The passion, dedication, intelligence and social consciousness Scottie Smith brought to this great Commonwealth will never be forgotten, and his influence will continue. Throughout his life, Scottie Smith demonstrated strong character and was an element of invincible strength to all the lives he touched.

Section 3. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Scottie Smith.

Section 4. The Clerk of the House of Representatives is hereby directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Joyce A. Wheatley Smith, 210 Southhampton Drive, Louisville, Kentucky 40223.
