A RESOLUTION honoring the Wayne County Cardinals boys' basketball team, 2002 KHSAA 12th Region Champions.
WHEREAS, the 2001-2002 edition of the Wayne County High School Cardinals boys' basketball team re-established their program as the dominant force in the 12th Region over the past 15 years by winning the 2002 regional championship and advancing to the KHSAA Sweet Sixteen Boys Basketball State Tournament, traveling the same path the school took in 1989, 1994, 1995, and 1997; and
WHEREAS, the Cardinals enjoyed success throughout the season, compiling a record of 30 wins against only 3 losses while winning the H&W Classic, winning the Wright/Shearer Cotton State Shootout, going undefeated at home, and losing just one game to a regional opponent all season; and
WHEREAS, although the Cardinals' season ended in disappointing fashion with a heartbreaking one-point loss to Whitesburg in the first round of the state tournament, nothing could diminish the pride that all of Wayne County felt while watching their boys achieve greatness; and
WHEREAS, the Cardinals were guided to history by Head Coach Rodney Woods, who since 1986 has led the Cardinals to five sweet sixteen appearances and a state runner-up finish in 1989, and who was ably assisted by assistant coaches Jack Baker, Allen Burchett, Kevin Jones, Andy Sloan, and William Shearer; and
WHEREAS, the Cardinals were led on the floor by senior Evan Dick, the only senior starter, who was named the most valuable player in the 12th Region, Jerrod Gibbons, Tyrone Green, Brad Bell, and Steven Sexton; and
WHEREAS, the achievements of the Wayne County Cardinals boys' basketball team should be recognized and applauded;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The members of this body, both individually and collectively, hereby hail and commend the Wayne County High School Cardinals boys' basketball team upon the fantastic success during the 2001-2002 season.
Section 2. The Kentucky Senate hereby proclaims the coaches, players, support staff, and cheerleaders of the Wayne County Cardinals to be outstanding citizens and exemplary representatives of the Commonwealth.
Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to Peggy Shearer, Principal, Wayne County High School, 2 Kenny Davis Boulevard, Monticello, Kentucky 42633.
