A RESOLUTION adjourning the House of Representatives in loving memory and honor of Barbara Price-Cordery.

With deepest respect and admiration, we pay homage and tribute to Barbara Price-Cordery, and we pause in silent reverence for her soul.

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery was born in 1948 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and traversed these earthly bounds in the early hours of Friday, March 15, 2002; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery exhibited outstanding leadership skills, having been the first African-American woman elected as chairperson of the Kentucky Derby Festival, having served as secretary to the Kentucky Derby Festival Board of Directors and chairperson of the "They're Off!" Luncheon Committee, having served as chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Presbyterian Community Center and raising over three million dollars for a new community center, having been a founder of the First African Heritage Weekend Series held on the Belvedere in Louisville, Kentucky, having been a producer of the Miss West Louisville Pageant during the 1970's and 1980's, and having been the first African-American employee of The Voice Newspaper in Louisville, Kentucky; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery proved extraordinary in her other social and professional endeavors as a nine-year board member of the Kentucky Derby Festival, as an esteemed member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (Louisville Alumnae Chapter), as a contributing member of the Doonesbury Political Discussion Group, as a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church, as a distinguished member of the Kiwanis of West Louisville, as earnest volunteer for the Metro United Way, as a passionate worker with "at risk" children within the Jefferson County Public School System, and as a tireless worker with "drug-free" schools and communities in Louisville; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery was a spiritual individual who loved fashion and style, being a part-time fashion model and well known and admired for her love of African attire and Frank Olive hats; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery exhibited so much strength and courage throughout her illness that Pharmacia, manufacturer of a cancer treatment drug, invited her to speak at their national sales meeting and subsequently named their sales award to the salesperson who most typifies what she stood for in dealing with cancer, the "Barbara Price Courage Award," the Doonesbury Political Discussion Group created an educational scholarship fund in her name for the Sudanese refugees known as "The Lost Boys," and the Louisville Section of the National Council of Negro Women awarded her with the 1994 Bethune Community Service Award; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery adored her coworkers and only reluctantly retired from her position as Unit Manager with the Jefferson County Public Schools Head Start Program in 2000, due to her failing health; and

WHEREAS, Barbara Price-Cordery loved and sacrificed for her children, and was the devoted wife of James Cordery, the adored mother of Stacy Robinson and CeSaire Price, the cherished daughter of Rose Hill and stepdaughter of Charles Hill, and the loving sister of Belinda Hill, Donald Chase (Pat) Hill, Gregory Hill, Cedric Hill, and Julius Hill; and

WHEREAS, when we reflect upon the memory of Barbara Price-Cordery, we should be reminded of her great spiritualness and how proud she was to be an African-American woman, and we should be reminded of her gentle, caring, and courageous manner that she demonstrated daily throughout her life, and her passing has left a void that will not be filled, and she is mourned across the length and breadth of the Commonwealth of Kentucky;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The House of Representatives does hereby express its utter sense of bereavement upon the passing of Barbara Price-Cordery, and extends to her family and many friends its most profound and heartfelt sympathy.

Section 2. When the House of Representatives adjourns this day, it does so in loving memory and honor of Barbara Price-Cordery.

Section 3.
