Welcome to your professional association! We hope you had a good, restful summer and are ready to take on the joys and responsibilities of classroom teaching as a substitute teacher. This profession has its special challenges. OSTA is your lifeline to help and advice specifically related to substitute teaching.

Our Fall Conference October 18 at the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum in McMinnville will

include a tour of the museum and lessons you can take to your classrooms. See conference details below.

Oregon Daily Minimum Salary for Substitute Teachers in 2008--2009 is $150.16.

Mary Kolousek Oregon Substitute Teacher of the Year 2008

Mary Kolousek was selected for her outstanding work in the Gaston School District and was recognized January 17 during the School Board meeting.

Kolousek is a natural as a Spanish or math substitute. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and mathematics from Texas Tech University and got her teaching credentials from Portland State University.

"I wanted to be a stay-at-home mom, so subbing really suited me," "I got my teaching credentials after volunteering in my kids' classes and finding I really loved being in class. Kolousek's secrets to being the best sub in the state include making a seating chart as soon as possible, to learn students' names quickly. "Calling kids by name makes a world of difference, in my class and having them respond to me in a positive way" she explained.

Other finalists for Teacher of the Year were Roy Hart, of Corvallis; Barbara Bannister, of Woodburn; Robert Guenther, of Silverton; and Mary Johnson, of Forest Grove.
