A RESOLUTION honoring Bernice Dickerson.
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson is a long time resident of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, living in Adairville; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson ran for city council of Adairville and won her first council race in 1983-- the year she celebrated her 70th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson has remained as a city council member to this day, running in and winning 11 elections, and thus bringing her city legislative service to Adairville for over two decades; and
WHEREAS, it has been determined that Bernice Dickerson has the distinction of being the first black woman elected to a city council in Logan County; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson has served the citizens of Adairville conscientiously and faithfully for her term of office, which has been proven by her constituency through her continual reelection as council member; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson has celebrated her 92nd birthday and is still serving the citizens of Adairville; and
WHEREAS, it has been recognized that Bernice Dickerson may be the eldest elected official in Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, it has been recognized that Bernice Dickerson has the distinction of being the longest-serving black elected official holding office in Kentucky;
WHEREAS, the wisdom, life experience, and institutional knowledge that Bernice Dickerson brings the citizens of Adairville garnered over her considerable years of service on the council is immeasurable and invaluable; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson's service to the community is expressed not only in terms of service on the council, but has been characterized by service in the Adairville Homemaker Club, her membership in the Senior Choir of the Mt. Herman Baptist Church, where she has sung for more than 35 years, and her service as the clerk of her church; and
WHEREAS, Bernice Dickerson's dedication to the public at a time in life when most people would not consider public service and have, in fact, long since retired from their individual careers, stands out as most laudable and serves as a sterling example for all citizens of the Commonwealth;
NOW, THEREFORE,
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. The Senate does hereby laud and congratulate Bernice Dickerson for the distinction of being the longest-serving black elected official holding office in Kentucky, for her continuing zeal to serve the citizens of Adairville, and for the knowledge and skills she has accrued from the beginning of her distinguished public service career and that she still employs for the benefit of citizens of Adairville every day.
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Mrs. Bernice Dickerson, 424 Sampson Avenue, Adairville, Kentucky 42202, and to Mayor William Steen, 110 North Main Street, Post Office Box 185, Adairville, Kentucky 42202.
