Topic Exploration – Team Formation
University Research Foundation - Research Opportunity Development Grant: Phase 1 – Topic Exploration Fall 2016
PI Name: ______9
Disciplines: The URF supports research in all disciplines. For purposes of review, applications are assigned to four broad disciplinary areas: Biomedical Sciences, Humanities, Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Social Science and Management.
Program Description: The Research Opportunity Grant program was designed to facilitate the intersection of the forward trajectory of Penn’s research frontiers with the trajectory of the national and global research priorities. RODG applications must include faculty from 2 or more schools and should explicitly consider emerging research areas with new opportunities for support.
With an identified new research area in mind, Phase I grants provide up to $10,000 to enable a team to articulate a research focus, map Penn’s intellectual assets in the new area, coalesce the appropriate group of scholars, identify Penn’s potential contributions in the area in the context of national and international research initiatives and identify a funding target.
Budget: Applications up to $10,000 will be considered. Salary support for faculty is not allowable.
Grant Term, 1 year only: Unexpended funds must be returned. A no cost extension must be approved by the Vice Provost for Research. Requests for a no cost extension should be made prior to the expiration of an award. No cost extensions will only be granted for extenuating circumstances. Extensions will not be made for longer than 6 months. A progress-to-date report including a revised budget will be required. The extension form is available on the website or by emailing .

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH MENTORSHIP
The main purpose of incorporating undergraduate researchers into URF-funded projects is two-fold: to provide faculty with valuable research assistance on their projects, and to engage high-achieving Penn undergraduates in cutting-edge research projects. Faculty applicants are not required to incorporate undergraduate researchers into their proposal, but proposals containing a meaningful role for an undergraduate researcher will be given preference in the selection process.
Faculty investigators have complete flexibility in determining how to incorporate undergraduates into a research project. While the student research component is only a small portion of the URF award, faculty investigators are encouraged to use the funds to provide students with a genuine opportunity to explore research methodology through engagement and mentorship on key components of the project.
Examples of how undergraduate research assistants may assist faculty include:

This is by no means an exhaustive list of possibilities. For examples of faculty research projects engaging undergraduates funded through the Provost’s Undergraduate Research Mentorship program (PURM) please see the following sites:
https://www.curf.upenn.edu/sites/default/files/purmfac_2016a_v6.pdf and https://www.curf.upenn.edu/sites/default/files/purmfaclistings_2_11_15.pdf
The length and frequency of undergraduate engagement on the project will be determined by the faculty investigator. URF funding may be used to engage undergraduates in a variety of ways:
• To support a full-time undergraduate research assistant during the summer, either on a short-term basis, or (in conjunction with Work-Study funds or supplemented by the faculty member’s own research funds) for an entire summer
• To support an undergraduate part-time (5-10 hours per week) during the academic year
• To support an undergraduate on a short-term basis to complete a specific task on a project
• To provide one-time undergraduate involvement in a component of the research project
While formation of an ongoing research mentorship relationship is not a requirement, our hope is that this experience may encourage development of a continuing research mentoring relationship between the faculty member and student.
Faculty members wishing to consult about how they might effectively engage an undergraduate, or to discuss how to identify an undergraduate appropriate to their project needs, may consult.
