Team Selection

Only those athletes who have met all the eligibility criteria will be considered for team selection. For roster and OUA selections, the head coach shall receive recommendations from the event coaches and team captains and will strive to reach a consensus for the selection. In areas where consensus cannot be reached, the head coach shall have the final say in all matters of team selection. Selection priority will be given to those athletes who have demonstrated a high degree of commitment to our “One Team”. Decisions and selections will be made in order of the following priority

  1. What is best for the team and the program
  2. What is best for the individual

Team Trials

The first meet of the season will be the official team trial meet. Following this competition, a

team selection will be made. If any athletes were not able to attend the trial meet due to injury or

other special circumstances, these athletes will be given another opportunity to try-out for the

team if they are able to compete before the roster submission deadline (set by the athletic department). Those athletes who the coaching staff feels did not perform up to their potential at

the trial meet, and have the potential to be selected to the team, will be invited to try-out again.

Selection Criteria

The Team roster will consist of up to 20 men and 18 women. The prioritized criteria below will

be used to make the selection:

Selection priority will be given to those athletes who have demonstrated a high degree of

commitment to our “One Team”.

a) Athletes who combined will form the most competitive Team (highest potential Team scoring

at championship meets).

b) Athletes who have achieved the OUA and/or CIS standard (see website).

c) Athletes who have a significant chance to achieve the OUA standard.

d) Event coach recommendations.

Team Selection for UW Cross Country Athletes

Cross Country athletes meeting the following criteria will earn automatic selection to the Track

and Field Team. Special circumstances may warrant the auto-selection of other athletes.

a) Any individual medalists (top 3) at the OUA Championships and/or CIS All-Canadians (top

14 at the CIS Championships).

b) The top 3 UW athletes, for each men and women, who finish in the top 50% of the field at the

OUA Championships, CIS Championships, and the Athletics Canada Cross Country

Championships.

Cross country athletes not being auto-selected are to abide by the try-out procedures outlined above.

“Train as you would compete.”

Travel Roster Selection

All athletes named to the team are eligible and expected to compete at the local meets (non-overnight). To be eligible to go to the overnight travel meets each athlete must meet the travel standard. It is up to the discretion of the head coach, with recommendations from event coaches, to pick or deny an athlete that may be close to the standard or show lack of fitness. Other criteria to make travel squad would be relay considerations.

OUA Championship Selection

OUA Championship is not guaranteed, even for athletes on the official Team roster. Priority will

be given to athletes with the highest OUA ranking in a particular event. OUA selection and meet

entries will be decided by the coaching staff and entries will be based on what is best for the

Team in order to achieve the highest Team placing and qualify the most athletes to the national

championships. Considerations include top results, consistency, recent results and consistency,

experience, hand-off ability, and decision making for relay events.

OUA Entry Rules

a) Two entries per school per event are permitted without standard; except relays, which will

remain at one per school.
