Job Title: Psychology Technician
School/Department: School of Psychology, Social Work and Human Sciences
Responsible to: Head of School (HoS) or designate. / Post No: PSYCH018
Grade: 4
Location: Based at Paragon House, Brentford, but you will be required to undertake your duties at any site of the university as required.
SUMMARY OF MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
The psychology technician will provide technical support for staff and students’ in the school of psychology. The main purpose of the job will be to maintain the specialist equipment within psychology, assist staff with SPSS workshops and seminars, and provide support to dissertation students on using specialist equipment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.  Liaise with academic staff and existing IT services staff in the school of psychology to ensure full technical support for teaching, course development and research in this area.
2.  Maintain the efficient operation and orderly appearance of psychology work areas.
3.  Provide relevant technical assistance for student projects.
4.  Construct and /or install and maintain new and existing experimental equipment including EEG, Biopacs and Eye tracker and specialist software (superlab and e-prime).
5.  Assist in the maintenance of equipment by ordering consumables and seek quotes for new equipment as required.
6.  Maintain and update the psychology network pages and assist with the running of the research participation pool.
7.  Timetabling the use of specialist equipment and testing rooms in times of high demand.
8.  Overseeing and keeping records of the loan of equipment to students and staff.
9.  Organising and keeping records of questionnaires for student and staff research.
10. Undertake appropriate staff development courses.
11. Ensure local compliance with all relevant Health and Safety regulations and policies.
12. Any other commensurate with the role and grade.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

CRITERIA / ESSENTIAL / DESIRABLE
Qualifications: / A BPS accredited psychology degree. / Relevant postgraduate or professional qualification.
Knowledge and Experience: / Excellent knowledge of SPSS.
Experience of working as part of a team. / Relevant work experience
either in psychology, physiology or technical support in science.
Experience of supporting the use of psychological experimentation devices in teaching and research.
Experience of working in the higher education sector.
Experience of supporting workshops and seminars.
Experience of web content management
Experience of installing and maintaining equipment
Specific Skills: / High level of IT literacy and familiarity with psychology specialist software.
Demonstrable ability to consult with other members of the team and prioritise accordingly. / Familiarity with electronic means of communication such as Blackboard.
General Skills: / Ability to use initiative and work independently
Being able to deal with a demanding and varied workload.
The ability to prioritise tasks and manage own time in relation to pressure of work, and to be responsible for own area of work.
Good organisational skills.
The ability to establish and maintain good working relationships.
