CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES

My practice involves office, operating room and ambulatory surgical duties. I see gynecology consultations in the office, a variety of both medical and surgical problems related to women’s health. I share call with nine other gynecologists, providing emergency gynecologic coverage for the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region.

ON CALL RESPONSIBILITY

The call group arrangement in which I participate involves coverage for obstetrics and gynecologic emergencies on a 24 hour rotating schedule. I share a call day with two of the obstetricians, covering the gynecologic portion of the call.

SPECIAL SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE COMMUNITY

I specialize in gynecologic endoscopic surgery, both laparoscopic and hysteroscopic. I have advanced accreditation in laparoscopic surgery from the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and have introduced a number of procedures previously not available in the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region. A number of these procedures, such as laparoscopic sacral colpopexy, are not offered by any other surgeon. The minimal access approach to surgery offers a faster recovery for women as well as allowing for the conversion of many inpatient procedures to outpatients.

I see approximately 140 to 160 new consultations monthly. I spend the majority of my time involved in the clinical practice of medicine, with about ten percent devoted to teaching Obstetrics and Gynecology residents in the office, ambulatory surgery center and operating room. Ten percent of my time is also spent in clinical research designing and conducting clinical trials, analyzing data, writing scholarly papers and designing presentations for local, national and international meetings.

I have been a leader in converting procedures that have traditionally been completed as inpatients. By using laparoscopic techniques, surgeries such as hysterectomy, urethropexy and vaginal repair can now be completed as outpatients, which lowers the risk of hospital admission and reduces cost.

As the director of the Women’s Health Clinic in the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, I was responsible for the implementation of a program offering hysteroscopic tubal sterilization and global endometrial ablation, both of which can be completed in an ambulatory setting. I was responsible for the introduction of the hysteroscopic sterilization technique in Saskatchewan, and was the first surgeon in Western Canada to complete this procedure. This has not only resulted in improved, safer access to these procedures but has also moved them from the operating room, thus freeing a significant portion of time to continue to try and reduce operating room wait list times.

TEACHING

I have designed and implemented a senior resident elective rotation in Operative Endoscopy. The rotation is designed to provide teaching in advanced procedures such as total laparoscopic hysterectomy, laparoscopic correction of pelvic prolapse, endometriosis removal and hysteroscopic sterilization. The rotation consists of office assessments of appropriate patients, surgical procedures and office followup.

I have also provided preceptorships for a number of gynecologists wishing to learn advanced procedures.

I was the founder of the Saskatchewan Association of Gynecologic Endoscopists and was on the initial planning committee for the Society of Gynecologic Endoscopists of Canada. I have been responsible for organizing two laparoscopy conferences and wet labs for our provincial association.
