1.  General

The appointment will commence from 1st October 2017, with no fixed term following successful completion of a one year probationary period. For information about the college please see our website (www.lmh.ox.ac.uk

The person appointed will work alongside Dr Grant Tapsell & Prof Michael Broers, the History Tutors in Lady Margaret Hall, with our lecturer in medieval history Dr George Garnett (who is a Fellow at St. Hugh’s) and with the Tutors in the three Joint Schools with History (Ancient History, Modern Languages and Politics). Lady Margaret Hall currently admits ten undergraduates per year to read History and about five per year to read Joint Schools with History. Modern British history is a popular option for undergraduates. The College also admits visiting students from the USA taking a Junior Year Abroad.

2.  Duties

The person appointed will be responsible for teaching for both the History Prelims (first year) and for Final Honours Schools (2nd and 3rd years) , in two of the Modern British History papers (i.e. British History 5, 6 and 7. The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the team-taught theory papers 'Approaches to History' and 'Disciplines of History', and to play a significant role in the supervision of undergraduate dissertations, many of which tend to fall in the modern British field. A readiness to teach either General History 4 for History Prelims, and one or more of the Optional and Further subjects concentrating on the modern period, or the Politics paper 202 (British Politics and Government in the 20th Century might be an advantage).

The Lecturer will work under the direction of Dr Tapsell, Prof Broers and the Senior Tutor. S/he will be expected to teach undergraduates for the College for six contact hours per week during Full Term averaged over the three terms. The total teaching hours include both tuition given to undergraduates and any given to undergraduates of other colleges. All payment for such tuition shall be remitted to Lady Margaret Hall. The lecturer will be paid for any teaching over stint at the casual teaching rates; any teaching for visiting students which is over stint is paid at double the casual teaching rates. In addition to teaching, the lecturer will be expected to help as needed with related administrative duties and pastoral duties and will take part in undergraduate admissions. Training for admissions interviewing will be provided and is required.

3.  Salary and Benefits

Salary will be on the Senior Tutors’ Committee scale for stipendiary lecturers; the range for a 6 contact hour appointment £12.885 to £14,491 per annum at current rates. The post is superannuated within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and is considered a 50% time post. A research allowance of £270 per annum will be paid on presentation of receipts to the Senior Tutor of Lady Margaret Hall. The lecturer will be entitled to free lunches whenever the kitchens are open and to one free dinner per week during term. (A charge is made for drinks and for formal desserts).The lecturer will be entitled to a shared college room for teaching and study purposes, and will be eligible for election to membership of the Senior Common Room (SCR) at Lady Margaret Hall (for which a small subscription would be payable). Membership of the SCR will give entitlement to take other meals which must be paid for.

There is no entitlement to sabbatical leave.

4.  Selection Criteria

The successful candidate should have

·  a high level of academic achievement (commensurate with the candidate’s career stage).

·  good research achievement or potential. This could be demonstrated by the candidate’s doctoral thesis, any published or forthcoming work or clear research plans.

·  the ability or potential to be an effective and inspiring teacher in the tutorial context. Some direct experience of tutorial teaching would be an advantage.

·  the ability to teach the required courses.

·  an understanding of the needs of high achieving undergraduates, and a commitment to fostering high academic achievement in undergraduates.

·  good communication skills, and sensitivity to deal effectively with pastoral duties.

·  an enthusiasm for involvement with the wider life of the College and the potential to contribute to the intellectual community.

·  a commitment to access and equal opportunities

·  the right to work in the UK (in a teaching role)

In addition a short sample of written work i.e. an article or chapter (published or unpublished) of up to 10,000 words, should be included.
