I. COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE: NUR 2993: Health Assessment

II.CREDIT HOURS: 3 semester hours (32 Theory and 32 Laboratory hours.)

III.PLACEMENT: Fall semester, Junior Year

IV.PREREQUISITES:Admission to the College of Nursing, Pre/Coreq. N3062

V.COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The theory/lab course is an introduction to basic concepts of health assessment of individuals across the lifespan. The student will be prepared for basic assessment of individuals in the community and clients in stable condition in health care facilities.

VI.COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Identify factors that influence a systematic assessment process.
  1. Utilize elements of reasoning to describe variations in findings and approaches used to collect and interpret data obtained from various ethnic, cultural, religious and age groups.
  1. Identify components of subjective and objective data collection.
  1. Perform a health history on a client using therapeutic communication, demonstrating compassion and assuring client confidentiality.
  1. Identify characteristics of a well-integrated health assessment.
  1. Perform a systematic health examination on a client.
  1. Communicate data obtained from the health assessment appropriately.

VIII.COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Students are responsible for all assignments and materials presented in lectures and in the assessment labs.
  1. Students are required to be present at all of the labs. If an emergency situation arises, the student must notify faculty prior to missing lab. Students arriving unprepared for lab will not be allowed to practice. A makeup activity will be assigned per faculty discretion. Students will utilize workbooks during lab.
  1. Students will submit 8 System Documentation papers following the lab for that system. Systems include: Heart, Lungs, Skin/Nails, Abdomen, Neurological, Musculoskeletal, Head/Neck, and Eyes/Ears.These may be hand written or typed on the appropriate outline and will be similar to the Lab manual information. Late papers lose 5pts per day, including weekends.
  1. There will be weekly activities and quizzes online with Evolve. Students must pass 10 of the quizzes at 90% or better to earn 5% of the final grade. The quizzes may be taken multiple times.
  1. Students will submit a Pediatric (age 2-12) Health history paper on the designated date. This paper will follow the outline in your syllabus and include labor/delivery information, developmental milestones, and cultural/spiritual assessment. This paper should be typed and double-spaced. Late papers lose 5pts per day, including weekends.
  1. Students are expected to be present for all examinations given at the scheduled times. It is the responsibility of the student to notify the lead instructor prior to the exam if he/she is unable to take the exam. Makeup exams may be a different format (essay, fill in blank…) per discretion of the faculty.
  1. Students will perform a selected systems physical assessment on a partner for the Final Lab Practicum Examination and must earn a 75% or better to pass the course.

IX.METHODS OF INSTRUCTION & LEARNING ACTIVITIES

Application of theory and psychomotor skills is facilitated by lectures, assigned readings, videos, group work, internet activities, health history paper, and selected laboratory experiences.

N3043: Health Assessment—Pediatric Health History

Your textbook includes all the necessary information you are expected to include in your required recordings for the history and physicals. This paper is on a child (2-12 y/o). Be age and gender appropriate. Excellent reference material is found in Jarvis p. 84-97 and an example on p. 852-854. (Please submit typed and double spaced on October 23, at the beginning of your lab)
