RHB 787 – Teaching Apprenticeship in Rehabilitation Science

(Credit Hours 1-4)

Registration Procedures

Description

A study of instructional methods in higher education including development of course syllabi, teaching objectives, developing and grading assignments, class presentations, and examinations. The emphasis is on classroom dynamics and innovative techniques for instruction. Prereq: Admission to the Rehabilitation Sciences Ph.D. Program or by consent of the instructor.

Students will be mentored by the course instructor throughout the semester. They will gain experience teaching discipline specific coursework to students majoring in the discipline.

Course Objectives

·  develop portions of a course syllabus.

·  develop and evaluate assignments.

·  develop and present course material using current technologies; and

·  develop and grade course examinations.

Student Responsibilities:

1.  Student discusses interest in RHB 787 with Faculty Advisor.

2.  Student and Faculty Advisor seek appropriate course in which to have a mentored teaching experience.

3.  Student requests and obtains agreement from a faculty member to serve as the Faculty Supervisor for the Teaching Apprenticeship. The Rehabilitation Science Director of Graduate Study (DGS) and the student’s Faculty Advisor must approve of the experience.

4.  Student develops a draft PROPOSAL for teaching practicum and completes student identification information on the APPROVAL FORM. In collaboration with Faculty Supervisor responsible for course.

5.  Student registers for RHB 787 – Teaching Apprenticeship.

6.  Student works with the Faculty Supervisor to finalize the apprenticeship and complete necessary documentation.

7.  PROPOSAL must be approved before the start of the semester, otherwise the student withdraws from the course. If the student must withdraw from the course, this is a very serious problem since many people, including the students, are counting on the RHB student.

Faculty Advisor Responsibilities:

8.  Advisor discusses appropriateness of course in relationship to student’s

personal goals and program of study.

9.  Advisor gives the student the appropriate forms and discusses procedures.

10.  Advisor approves PROPOSAL.

Faculty Supervisor Responsibilities:

11.  Faculty Supervisor works with student to finalize the APPROVAL FORM and PROPOSAL, including grading system, and credit hours awarded.

12.  Faculty Supervisor submits APPROVAL FORM and PROPOSAL to the Director of Graduate Study and the student’s Faculty Advisor.

13.  Faculty Supervisor directs the student’s learning experiences and grades the student’s performance.

PROPOSAL

This information is to be completed by the student in collaboration with the Faculty Supervisor. This should be completed before the start of the semester and perhaps as early as the start of the previous semester. Information should include:

I.  Course(s) where Teaching Apprenticeship will occur (include location).

II.  Description of Responsibilities, Objectives, Activities to be completed.

III.  Student Learning Objectives (Identify behavioral objectives the student will meet.)

IV.  How will Apprenticeship be evaluated by the students who are taught?

V.  Evaluation Methods and Criteria by faculty supervisor to evaluate RHB student.

Proposal must be signed by both the Faculty Supervisor and student.
