WELCOME WEEK 2010

Dear new student

Welcome to ExeterUniversity’sCollegeofSocial Sciences and International Studies at Tremough and to studying at the Cornwall Campus! You’ll find two of the College’s Departments have a presence here: Politics and Law.

This letter is addressed to you as a student on a Politics programme and explains what will be happening during your first week at University. The content applies to you whether you are taking Single Honours or (SH) orCombined Honours (CH). By CH we mean two subjects in combination, such as History andPolitics. Make sure that you note which events apply to SH and which to CH students.

WELCOME WEEK TIMETABLE: A step-by-step guide

We presume you have registered during the weekend in the ASU and collected your card – without this you cannot access any of the buildings.You should have completed your registration with the University on-line. See for more details

DAY 1: Monday 27 September

The first event, forCombined Honours students only, is a coffee morning at 11am to meet others on your programme.

There is a session for mature students at 12 noon. You will have had a separate letter informing you of this.

There is a Welcome Lunch for ALL students at 1pm in seminar 2-4. This is an opportunity for you to meet your year group and 2nd and 3rd students in an informal way. They will then take you round the campus. Hopefully by the end of the week you will be able to make your way around the campus! The History and Politics Societies are very keen to meet you and tell you all about being a student here in Cornwall.

DAY 2: Tuesday 28 September

The next key event is the Programme Talk. The CollegeIntroductions (which both Single AND Combined Honours students MUST attend) are today. At these you will be introduced to all the things you will need to know to start your degree. You will also be introduced to the staff.

Single AND Combined Honours students MUST also attend an induction session which runs through the administrative details you will need to know during your time at university.

DAY 3: Wednesday 29 September

At 9am you need to attend the IT induction in the Chapel Theatre. You will be given your IT login so you can use the internet on campus and in your rooms in Glasney. This includes a talk by the Library staff where you will be informed about the Library. This includes essential information such as where the library is–what opening times are,how many books can be borrowed .Note that your unicard is your library card.

For students taking History modules there are introductions to the modules at 12. These will introduce you to the teaching modules, what they involve and what you can expect.

At 4pm there is a Reception for all Politics students in Seminar Room 2 in Peter Lanyon. You will meet some of the students on your programme as well as staff from your subjects.

DAY 4: Thursday30September

At 1pm there is a skills session specifically for politics students in seminars 2-4 Peter Lanyon. For History/Politics students there is a History reception at 4. You will have an opportunity to meet your academics up close!

DAY 5: Friday1 October

At 9am there is a Student Services Induction in the Chapel Theatre

10-11 Exeter Award and Careers talk in Lecture A, another opportunity to meet the whole school.

12-1230noon Welcome from senior members of campus, we would like you to attend this please, as it discusses welfare and disciplinary matters.
