Summary & Rationale (2-3 paragraphs) In the field of digital libraries, there is considerable literature regarding how to create a digital collection, how objects should be chosen for digitization, best practices for metadata etc. However, there is very little information on how to encourage use of digital collections. OSUL&P devotes a considerable amount of time to digitization of primary source materials; but, aside from the class that SCARC teaches, has little understanding about how the digital collections are used, if at all, by OSU faculty and students. OSULP has created a wide variety of digital collections. A project that supports student useof these digital collections to enhance their learning experience supports all four key goalsof the strategic plan. One, it will enable research and learning as students discover our digital content. Two, it will add to the learning and engagement programs of the library. Three, it is hoped that this will lead to a change in the scholarly environment by promoting the idea of encouraging the use of digital collections, when this research is disseminated. Four, it will leverage my potential as a digital librarian and a teacher in a creative endeavorenabling me to help a faculty member incorporate our digital materials and possibly being an embedded librarian in a course.
I will write a request for proposals, asking faculty to incorporate OSULP’s digital collections (or one digital collection) into a course taught Winter Quarter 2014. I willinclude detailed descriptions of our digital collections to assist faculty members in determining how the collections might be used within their curriculum. I will review the applications with Sue Kunda and Philip Vue and will chose a proposal that deeply integrates a collection or collections into the curriculum and offers students a chance to incorporate the digital collections in their research. A $1,000 professional stipend will be provided to the faculty member to compensate the extra timerequired to alter their curriculum.
Goals & Expected outcomes
This project is directly in line with goal 1.4 of the strategic plan by supporting learning in virtual spaces. We have amazing digital collections and this will support learning and research using them. It also supports goal 2.3 to initiate conversations to embed our expertise across the curriculum. I have expertise in digital libraries that could be combined with faculty expertise to enhance research skill development.
This project will provide me with an opportunity to work with material embedded within a course. It will also allow me to experience our digital collections from the point of view of the faculty and students to obtain a new perspective and develop ideas for improving their usefulness through additional web development or metadata. It will also allow me to see how undergraduate students work with primary materials to inform a workshop I am creating on helping students use digital collections as primary resources.
Methodology& Timeline for completion
July 1 2013: Call for proposals, digital collection descriptions and evaluation rubric complete
July 15, 2013: Send out call for proposals by email. Post call on library and CDSS websites
August 15, 2013: Proposals due
September 3, 2013 Proposal chosen and faculty member notified
Fall 2013: Work with chosen faculty member to incorporate digital objects into curriculum
Winter: 2014: Work with the faculty member to teach the course and incorporate materials
I will write the call for proposals and evaluation criteria and send it to my review committee (Sue Kunda and Philip Vue)for comments. The review committee and I will evaluate the proposals and choose a faculty member/course for participation. I will work with the faculty member.
It is difficult to estimate specific time commitment for the project. The exact schedule will depend on a number of factors including the number of respondents and the exact amount of assistance required by the faculty member. However, the total time commitment will be easily integrated into my current work schedule.
Dissemination planIncludedetails about potential venues and audiences within OSU Libraries and/or in the field
While there is some literature on using archives and special collections in the college classroom, there is little research on using digital collections to enhance curriculum. Therefore, I hope to publish an article on this project in an academic libraryjournal and make a copy available in ScholarsArchive@OSU I will also seek out speaking opportunities and will be happy to present what I learn at an LFA seminar and/or OSUL&P in-service.
