Introduction

The rapidly changing context within the national and international Health and Social Care sectors requires individuals who can lead and manage within a turbulent environment and increasingly this means working across different organisational and professional boundaries. The MSc and Postgraduate Diploma in Leadership, Management and Change in Health and Social Care is designed to meet the needs of current or potential senior and middle managers working in the health and social care sector, social enterprises, the voluntary or independent sector and other organisations who wish to develop strategic leadership and management skills.

The programme focuses on a number of areas that are designed to equip you with leadership and management theory and skills required of leaders and managers in health and social care organisations. The topics covered include: leadership theory and practice, strategy and policy, human resource management and managing change. Study can be undertaken on a full or part time basis and the programme is normally delivered in block teaching, so allowing you to flexibly meet your own academic, professional or organisational needs. The team have extensive experience in delivering management education and development and have a background of publications and research.

In addition to the aims for the postgraduate diploma, the programme is intended to:

giving you the opportunity to undertake a substantial management project.

Both stages should enhance the management capability and overall performance of your employing organisations.

Curriculum

Post Graduate Diploma

In order to achieve this stage of the programme, you need to successfully complete modules amounting to 120 credits at Level 6 or 7, including at least 100 credits at Level 7. The programme consist of 4 core modules, each at 30 credits.

MSc

In order to achieve this stage of the programme you need to successfully complete modules amounting to 180 credits at Level 6 or 7, including at least 160 credits at Level 7. The Management Project for the MSc includes attending compulsory taught sessions and working with a supervisor from the tutorial team, on an individual tutorial basis, over a period normally of between 12 to 18 months on a management opportunity or problem from your current or future workplace (learning outcomes L011-L017).

Credit for prior experiential or certificated learning can be counted as part of the credit requirement for these programmes

Teaching and Assessment Strategies

The teaching and assessment strategies are designed to achieve learning outcomes LO1-LO17. Learning outcomes LO1,L02, LO3,L04,L05,L06,L07, L08, LO9, L010 are developed through the use of a series of contextualising lectures, workshops and group sessions that cover key topics and provide students with the opportunity to discuss and analyse the topics and to improve their communication, problem solving and presentation skills (L08, L09, L010). You will be given the opportunity to discuss and analyse the topics covered in the modules during workshops and encourage to participate in on-line discussions (LO1, L02, L03, L04, L05, L06, L011, L012, L013).

Learning outcomes L01-L014 will also be addressed using directed student study, this will enable you to develop and expand your knowledge and analytical skills by undertaking guided reading, preparing seminar papers, preparing for presentations and discussions in workshops. Support from the module leader will be available and you can access; face to face, via the phone, by e-mail, using an instant messenger, by Skype or Elluminate.

The Virtual learning environment is used extensively to complement other learning and teaching methods used within the programme and to support and direct you in your studies. The VLE includes relevant web-sites, documents and a range of on-line resources such as audio files (LO1-L014). The VLE enables you to access other relevant and contemporary learning materials and participate in interactive on-line group discussions and activities. You will be expected to use the VLE facility and support will be available to enable you to do this.

The Management Project for the MSc includes attending compulsory taught sessions and working with a supervisor from the tutorial team, on an individual tutorial basis, over a period normally between 12 to 18 months on a management opportunity or problem from your current or future workplace (learning outcome L01-L017).

Learning outcomes (LO1-LO17) are assessed through written assessment and you are expected to integrate theory whilst applying this to the consideration of leadership and management theory and practice.

If you have prior certificated learning or professional experience which may be equivalent to parts of this programme, the University has procedures to evaluate this learning in order to provide you with exemptions from specified modules contained within the curriculum. Admission to the programme is in accordance with the regulations of the University of Bradford and you should normally hold a first degree or acceptable professional qualification. Students who can demonstrate that they have worked academically at Level 7 will also be considered. However, if you do not possess such a qualification but have appropriate work experience we will consider your application.

Learning Resources

The JB Priestley Library on the city campus and the library at School of Management provide a wide range of printed and electronic resources to support your studies. We offer quiet study space if you want to work on your own, and group study areas for the times when you need to discuss work with fellow students. Subject librarians for each School provide training sessions and individual guidance in finding the information you need for your assignment, and will help you organise your references properly.

Student PC clusters can be found in all our libraries and elsewhere on the campus. Many of these are open 24/7. You can also use the University's wireless network to access the internet from your own laptop. Most of our online journals are available on the internet (both on and off campus), and you can also access your University email account, personal information and programme-related materials this way.

Staff are on hand during the daytime to help you if you get stuck, and there is a 24/7 IT helpline available.

Student Support and Guidance

Programme Team

Support for you personally and in your programme of study, will be provided both by the University and the Programme Team. You will be allocated a personal academic tutor who is someone with whom you will be able to talk about any academic or personal concerns. The School will ensure that there is someone available with whom you feel comfortable to help and support you. You will be provided with a comprehensive series of handbooks that you can consult on a range of learning issues and your programme tutors will be available to consult on subject specific queries.

Professional career guidance and development support is available throughout your time as a student and as a graduate from Career Development Services. The support available from Career Development Services includes a wide range of information resources, one to one appointments, a weekly workshop programme, a mentoring programme, graduate recruitment and careers fairs, plus information and help to you find part time work, summer work placements, internship programmes and graduate/postgraduate entry vacancies. Career Development Services annually undertakes a survey of all postgraduates to find out their destination six months after graduation. The survey gathers data on the employment and further study routes graduates have entered and a range of other information including job roles, name and location of employers, salary details etc. The survey findings for each programme of study are presented on the programme information pages on the University website and via Career Development Services’ website
