Task Description and Instructions to Students

TASK 1
The school is investigating to possibility of moving to a Linux based operating system for their desktop environment. Your task is to evaluate the new operating system on desktop and laptop computers without altering the existing setup of the systems. Therefore, you are required to create a USB drive that can be used to boot the computers at the school so evaluation can take place. Once you have the system working, you will be given a number of tasks to perform for evaluation purposes.
INSTALL A COMPUTER OPERATING SYSTEM CHECKLIST
  1. Collect a 2gig USB key from your teacher, or provide your own.
  2. Check all cables on the computer are plugged inand turned on and are in line with OH&S.
  3. Use the Microsoft Windows Operating System to create a Linux USB boot disk. Your teacher has information to help you with this.
  4. Set the BIOS so that the computer will boot from the USB
  5. Insert USB drive and boot the computer from it.
  6. NOTE! After you boot the computer with linux, it may ask you if you wish to Install linux to the system. DO NOT install linux to the computer!
  7. Once Linux has booted, configure the web browser to use the school’s proxy server to connect to the internet.
  8. Use your local username and password to connect to the school’s student server.
  9. Use the Linux version of a wordprocessor to document the steps taken to perform steps 7 and 8 above.
  10. Use the linux package management system to download and install a new application (this could be a game if you like).
  11. Evaluate the operating system with respect to : Speed, Ease of Use, general functionality, cost, total cost of ownership when compared to Microsoft Windows.
  12. Write a report evaluating the system when compared to Microsoft Windows. In your report you are to discuss the feasibility of moving the school to a Linux Desktop.
  13. Upload your document to the school’s moodle server.
  14. Show your working USB key to your teacher.
