National / Local Standards / Industry / ISTE:

This course meets the requirements of NFPA1001 – Standard Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications and all other state, local and provincial health and safety regulatory requirements.

Enduring Understandings:

Fire fighters must practice safe operating procedures when responding to an alarm. The successful management of a fire emergency begins with the safe arrival of the respondent and there are specific procedures that must be followed from the time of alarm to arrival on scene. Upon arrival, fire fighters must demonstrate extreme attention to detail when sizing-up an incident. The size-up dictates the plan of action and determines incident management procedures based on priority. Students interested in entering a career in fire emergency services will benefit greatly from early exposure to the difficult, yet necessary decisions that must be made in a split second in order to ensure the greatest life safety and damage control.

Essential Questions:

  • What does the emergency vehicle driver need to consider in route to an emergency?
  • Why is it necessary to control utilities?
  • Why does incident response begin with response preparation?
  • How is information gathering and processing part of a fire fighters job?
  • Why must respondents be alert and detail oriented when responding to an incident?
  • How does initial size-up influence the plan of action?
  • Why is it crucial that priorities be evaluated during size-up?

Knowledge from this Unit:

Students will:

  • Outline the series of actions involved in incident response.
  • List the safe operating procedures taken to promote an efficient response.
  • Recognize warning signs upon arrival at the scene of an incident.
  • Identify status indicators to look for at the scene of an incident.

Skills from this Unit:

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate response preparation measures.
  • Simulate a smooth on scene arrival.
  • Begin the size-up face given information from dispatch.
  • Perform an initial evaluation of an emergency scene and communicate information.
  • Develop a plan of action based on the size-up of an emergency scenario.
