Math

This week in math we continued our geometry

unit. We learned how to find the area of all shapes

by making triangles inside the shape then multiply 180 by the amount of triangles in the shape. Also we learned how to classify different shapes into different categories by looking at their characteristics or attributes. We made different shapes with pattern blocks, and learned how much the angle measure

is for every shape. One of the coolest things we learned is about opposite

angles, adjacent angles, how to make tessellations (which are repeated shapes that go over and over again in a pattern)!

Social Studies

These three weeks in Social Studies we have

been working on our end of unit projects. Each of

us chose either an ancient American tribe or an explorer! We were allowed to work independently or in small groups on a project of our choice. Yesterday we had a 5th Grade Gallery Walk and celebration. Our families, friends and even some former teachers came; we showed off our hard-work and got to see everyone else’s projects too!

Science

Today we started our newest science unit: Electricity! We started in groups with a focus statement. We then had 10 minutes to list any question we could think of about that statement. Then, we looked at our questions to decide if they were open or closed ended questions. Monday we will start our first experiment and start to try to answer some of these good questions!

Writing

This week in writing we worked on editing our informational writing by adding features like: headings, captions, bold words, timelines, charts and diagrams. We are aloud to write about anything we want. Some people are starting to conference to see if their writing good enough to start a final draft. Everybody in the class is doing really well so far. A lot of people are having fun in writing.

Reading

In reading, along with doing independent reading, we have been doing word study. There are three groups, and each group has their own set of words. At first we sorted our words into columns based on patterns. Then, with our words, we made crossword puzzles, sorted words into the same part of speech, and wrote letters to our friends. When we are done, we get to work on independent reading.

Everything Else…

Next Wednesday is Slipper Day! We are very excited to spend our half day on fun literacy based activities! Don’t forget your slippers!
