TOTAL STUDENT WORKLOAD

Students are required to attend and participate in all the formal timetabled sessions for the unit. Students are also expected to manage their directed learning and independent study in support of the unit. Where normal timetabled sessions do not take place, additional directed learning may be provided, and/or students are expected to undertake independent learning.

PREREQUISITES AND CO-REQUISITES:

This unit can be taken as part of the whole Foundation Degree or a stand–alone Professional Development Unit. For both the Foundation Degree and standalone professional development unit the following applies:

Evidence of ability to study at FHEQ Level 5and successful completion of level 4 Introduction to Histopathology or equivalent.

If taken as a stand-alone PDU, students must provide evidence of acquired knowledge, skills and abilities that they are currently demonstrating in their role. These must be clearly articulated at the interview and reflected in references.

UNIT DESCRIPTION

This unit is intended for year 2 (HE level 5) students and will give the students fundamental theoretical knowledge to support them in the work place.

The unit builds on the level 4 unit by relating histological changes in tissue to a range of common disease processes. A range of specialist techniques in Histopathology are also examined in order to enable an understanding of the underpinning theory behind these techniques. The role of quality assurance in Histopathology is further examined.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of the unit, students should be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding

K1Evaluate common disease processes in relation to Histological changes.

K2Appraisethe process and application of a range of specialist Histopathological techniques to the diagnosis of disease.

Cognitive Skills

C1Assess the quality of Histopathological investigations, identify common tissue types and the effectiveness of staining.

C2Apply the underpinning theory of Histopathological processes to practice.

Practical and Professional Skills

P1Discuss scientific information with peers and service users using appropriate language.

Transferable and Key Skills

T1Apply and integrate information from a variety of sources to relate laboratory investigations to diagnosis of disease.

AREAS OF STUDY

  • Section cutting to include cell size and depth of cut.
  • Common disease processes in relation to specimen types in histopathology
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Cell markers
  • Microscopy and tissue recognition
  • Quality assurance of tissue sections

LEARNING AND TEACHING STRATEGY

The teaching strategy is a combination of formal lectures, problem solving tutorials and self-directed learning. Formal lectures will be classroom based and focus on the delivery of scientific information through exposition with formative assessment via question and answer. Problem solving tutorials accompany these lectures where students may be asked to consider investigations performed in the laboratory, their results and implications. Teaching materials will be available on MyCourse.Students will be expected to consolidate their learning by reading around the subjects discussed, this will be directed between teaching sessions.

ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

Summative assessment will comprise of two elements:A case study (AE1) based on a patient’s pathology record and how specialist investigations undertaken have supported the patient’s diagnosis and treatment.

An essay (AE2) on the role of the clinical laboratory in the diagnosis and treatment of a named pathological condition, to include the pathophysiology of the condition and how the investigative techniques usedcontribute to diagnosis of the condition.

ASSESSMENT

AE1Weighting:50%

Assessment type: Case study

Length/duration:1500 words

On-line submission: Yes

Grade marking: Yes

Anonymous marking:No

AE2 Weighting:50%

Assessment type: Essay

Length/duration: 1500 words

On-line submission:Yes

Aggregation of marks

Students MUST PASS all elements of assessment in order to pass the unit; therefore this unit is unaggregated.

Re-assessment Arrangements

Arrangements for referrals will follow University Assessment regulations.

Students will normally be able to re-submit their original case study (AE1) with revisions.

Students will normally be able to re-submit their original essay (AE2) with revisions.
