Unit of Study: Writing Process – Evaluation of Written Text – SC 15 Point Grading Rubric
Focus Question: What is the best preparation for reaching success as a writer?
Class Instruction for the next two weeks will be directed toward the structure of Grammar Skills for GT and Regular Classes.
Standards / Objective / Class Agenda7-4.1 – Organize written works to evaluate the four domains of content/development, organization, voice, and conventions. / TSW score written text using the SC 15 point grading rubric. / Writing Workshop
Student Gathering-Teacher Guided
- Quick Write/Student Response – TSW respond to the following prompt: “Describe the most difficult text you have written.”
- Mini-Lesson – TTW model the process of evaluating written text using the SC 15 Point Grading Rubric.
Independent
- TSW score written text using the SC 15 Point Grading Rubric.
- TTW conference with students as they evaluate.
Student Response
- Exit Slip – TSW respond to the following question: “What area did you find themost difficult to evaluate?”
AVID STRATEGIES:

Unit of Study: Grammar Launch – Pre-assessment of Conventions
Focus Question: How is grammar a system?
Class Instruction for the next two weeks will be directed toward the structure of Grammar Skills for GT and Regular Classes
Standard(s) / Class Objective / Class Agenda7-4.4-Use grammatical conventions of Standard Written English, including the reinforcement of conventions previously taught. / TSW revisit understanding of conventions through pre-assessment. / Writing Workshop

- Mini-Lesson – TTW introduce the pre-assessment of conventions to show background knowledge of students.
Independent
- TSW revisit conventions of grammar through pre-assessment.

- Exit Slip – TSW respond to the following prompt: “Explain three areas of conventions that you feel you need the most help.”

- Mini-Lesson – TTW reinforce the Unit of Grammar Launch. (TTW introduce the entire unit to build background knowledge for students.)
Independent
- TSW explore the concepts of grammar. TTW reinforce how grammar is connected and builds on each specific part.
- TSW complete a Concept Map to reinforce what they have discovered about grammar connections.
Student Response
- TSW participate in discussion using their Concept Maps to build understanding about the Grammar Launch Unit.

- Quick Write/Student Response: TSW respond to the following prompt: “Where would you start when building a sand castle?” (This prompt is chosen to lead students into a discussion about how grammar is a building block for language.)
- Mini-Lesson: TTW introduce the Eight Parts of Speech. TSW take notes in their Interactive Notebooks.
Independent
- TSW explore the eight parts of speech that builds the English language.
- TSW build a RAP to introduce the eight parts of speech.

- TSW share their RAPS.
