Title of Lesson: Pomegranates

Standard: Health Education Kindergarten through grade three

Language Arts Writing

2.1.0 Students write clear and coherent sentences and paragraphs that develop a central idea.

Objective: Students will learn about the pomegranate, its history and health benefits, the students will also taste the pomegranate and write a clear response regarding their new knowledge.

Materials:

ü  Pomegranate worksheet

ü  MyPyramid

ü  Overhead projector and pomegranate worksheet overhead

ü  One whole pomegranate for each group and one for the teacher

ü  Pomegranate juice

ü  Pomegranate seeds

ü  Ingredients for chosen recipe

ü  Cups, bowls, spoons and napkins

Procedures:

1.  Introduction: (10 minutes)

·  Introduce the lesson by passing out one pomegranate to each group of students. Ask students if they know what it is, have they ever tasted one before, where do they grow, what food group it belongs to, etc. Discuss MyPyramid. Ask students if they ate breakfast, what they ate, whether or not it is considered healthy, where those food items belong in MyPyramid and the importance of eating breakfast. Describe the relationship between nutrition and physical activity.

2.  Activity: (20 minutes)

·  Pass out the Pomegranate worksheet. Place the overhead on the projector and have the students try and guess the answers prior to revealing the correct answers. Students will copy the correct answers onto their worksheet.

·  Food Tasting Activity: Have the students work on the Pomegranate Word search as you pass out the pomegranate juice and ingredients for the chosen recipe. As a class, taste the pomegranate juice and ask for students’ opinions as to what it tasted like and how they liked it. Have students create their “Pomegranate Parfait” (the chosen recipe). As they are enjoying their Pomegranate Parfait introduce the concluding activity.

3.  Concluding Activity: (15 minutes)

·  Have the students complete the back of the Pomegranate worksheet, “What I Know About Pomegranates” (this worksheet may be used as a follow up activity).

Assessment: Collect student worksheet and assess answers and written response. Assess the students’ understanding of their new knowledge of pomegranates by reviewing their worksheets and evaluating the class discussions. Evaluate the lesson by using the student participation survey.

Pomegranate Parfait Recipe

Ingredients:

4 cups vanilla low-fat yogurt

1 cup pomegranate seeds

4 tablespoons seasonal berries

4 tablespoons low-fat granola or Grape nuts Cereal

4 tablespoons fat-free Cool Whip

Place 1 cup yogurt in bowl, top with ¼ cup pomegranate seeds, 1 tablespoon berries, 1 tablespoon granola/grape nuts, and 1 tablespoon cool whip. Serve immediately. Serves 4.
