/ Part 1 Immigration Restrictions
______-This term referred to the fact that many different cultures and races had blended in the United States.
______- A preference for native born Americans.There was fear and resentment that immigrants would take jobs for lower pay than American workers

Part 2 Discrimination in the West
______Railroad managers felt they could pay Mexicans less than members of other ethnic groups.In the Southwest’s farming industries landowners often forced Mexicans to work to repay debts. This system was called debt peonage.
Part 3 The Chinese Exclusion Act
______- lived in segregated neighborhoods and their children attended segregated schools.During the depression of the 1870’s, many agreed to work for low wages.American workers feared they would lose their jobs. As a result, labor groups pressured politicians to restrict Asian immigration.
______- Another fear that Americans had was the introduction of this drug brought from China into American society.
______This law banned all but a few Chinese immigration. The ban was not lifted until 1943.
______- President Theodore Roosevelt persuaded San Francisco officials to stop their separation policy. In exchange, Japan agreed to limit emigration to the United States
Part 4 African Americans Fight Legal Discrimination
______- By 1900, these states set up new voting restrictions meant to keep blacks from voting. They gave each voter a literacy test, they implemented poll taxes (a tax that one had to pay to enter a voting booth)
______- This clause stated that any person could vote if their father or grandfather was qualified to vote before January 1, 1867.

______-the 1896 Supreme Court case that ruled “Separate but equal” did not violate the 14th Amendment, upholding the “Jim Crow” laws of the era.
Part 5 Turn of the Century Race Relations
______- These people had to show respect to whites, including children. They had to yield the sidewalks to whites, and had to remove their hats. Those who did not follow the customs could be severely punished
______- She led an anti-lynching crusade and called on the federal government to take action.
______- Hebelieved in a gradual approach to racial equality through vocational education and economic success; he accepted social separation. He founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama. He believed that racism would end when blacks acquired useful labor skills and were valuable to society. He wrote an autobiography called Up From Slavery.
______- He was an African American educator who disagreed with Washington. He was the first African American to earn a Doctorate from Harvard. He started the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), and he also wrote the novel TheSouls of Black Folk.
______-A period during the early twentieth century, in which African Americans began leaving the South to go to Northern cities in search of jobs and to escape poverty and discrimination in the South.
