Big Idea Question? Why do communities need laws and government?

PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

Using the story template(provided in the Materials Packet), students will write and describelife in a town that is missing a law. Students will describe the problems in the town, the benefits and consequences of laws and how a new law came to be. (3.SS.4.1.1, 3.SS.4.1.2,3.LA.1.2.3,3.LA.2.1.3, 3.LA.2.2.1, 3.LA.3.1.3)

By creating and sequencing the Civics and Government Mobile template (provided in materials packet), students will identify and match the correct group of people that make, apply and enforce local laws in a community. They will also identify whether the office is elected or appointed. (3.SS.4.1.3,3.SS.4.2.2,3.LA.3.1.3, 3.LA.2.2.1, 3.LA2.2.3)

Students will decribe 2 community government servicesthat directly affect them using the “How the Community Government Helps Us” template(provided in the Pie Chart Booklet in the Materials Packet).(3.SS.4.2.3, 3.LA.2.2.1,3.LA.2.2.3 3.LA.3.1.3)

Students will identify ways they can participate in their community or local governmentsbyusing the “Pie Chart” and describing how they can contribute to their community.(3.SS.4.3.1, 3.LA.1.2.3, 3.LA.2.1.3, 3.LA.2.2.1, 3.LA.3.1.3)
