Give each child a set Word Card(ELL Teaching Guide page 96). Have children paste six of their cards on a piece of paper in two columns with three rows. Pass out coins, beans, or other counters to use as bingo cards. Say the definition of or phrase the describes one of the words. Have children look for the correct word and cover it with a chips. If necessary, announce the answer before moving on to the next word. A child calls bingo and wins the game when he or she has placed bingo chips on three words in a row. You may wish to have children trade bingo boards and play again.

Today we are going to be talking about theme and plot of the poster.
Let’s look at the poster.
What happens in the beginning, middle, and the end of story is the plot.
Every story has one big idea.
What is the theme of this poster? A family is buying fruit at the fruit market
and the youngest daughter is assisted by a very generous man.
What was the problem the youngest daughter had? The youngest daughter
wanted some apples, but not as many that came in a box. She didn’t have
a place to hold the apples.
How was the problem solved? The man helped the girl put the apples in
her shawl.
Do you help others that need help? Could someone call you generous?

A verb tells what someone or something does. A verb can show
something that happens now, in the past, or in the future.
Have students write complete sentences telling about what is happening in the poster using verbsfor present, past and future.
Readers / Reread the readerAmerican Hero Day. Have students respond to the questions on the inside back cover. Talk about it.

Helping someone makes a person a hero. (Theme)
Write about it:
Help children draw a picture or mask of a famous person they admire. They should write about why they think that person is a hero. (Theme)
