AN ACT TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 5653870 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE TO BE EQUIPPED WITH OR FOR THE OPERATOR OF A MOTOR VEHICLE TO EMPLOY ANY DEVICE THAT IS DESIGNED FOR JAMMING, SCRAMBLING, NEUTRALIZING, DISABLING, OR INTERFERING WITH RADAR, LASER, OR ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE USED BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY TO MEASURE THE SPEED OF A MOTOR VEHICLE, AND TO PROVIDE A PENALTY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

Motor vehicle speed detection jamming devices prohibited

SECTION 1. Article 31, Chapter 5, Title 56 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

“Section 5653870. (A) It is unlawful for a motor vehicle to be equipped with or for an operator of a motor vehicle to employ any device that is designed for jamming, scrambling, neutralizing, disabling, or interfering with radar, laser, or any other electronic device used by a law enforcement agency to measure the speed of a motor vehicle.

(B) A person who violates a provision contained in this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one thousand dollars.”

Time effective

SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
