tortillas: thin, round cakes make or corn meal that are served hot.
luckiest: having more luck and good fortune than anyone else.
chilies : a hot pepper that is used as seasoning
ELL Poster #14–Problem and Solution
Put the children into groups of two or three. Play a game in which you give the groups scenarios of problems and they have to devise creative but simple solutions. For example, you could say: You and your group share a bicycle . One afternoon, you both (or all) want to ride the bicycle, What can you do to make both (or all) of you happy?

Divide children into pairs and give. Give each pair one set of Word Cards (ELL Teaching Guide pg 96). Also give seven or eight bland cards to each pair. Have children write one of the words on each blank card. When they finish writing, have children mix all the cards together and spread them out face down. Children take turns picking up a card, reading it aloud, and trying to find its match. When a child finds a match, he or she says a sentence using that word and keeps the cards. The game ends when all the cards have been matched.
Reading Comprehension / Today we are going to be talking about theme and plot of the story
Rosa and Blanca. What happens in the beginning, middle, and the end of
story is the plot. Every story has one big idea.
What do Rosa and Blanca do for each other? They walk to the store
together and help each other with chores.
What do you thing is the big idea of this story? If you are generous to
people, then they are generous to you.
What did you learn about people from this story? I learned that when
People love each other, they think more of each other than they do of
themselves.
Grammar and Writing / More about verbs
Review definition of verbs.
A verb tells what someone or something does. A verb can show
something that happens now, in the past, or in the future.
This sentence tell about the present.
Rosa helps Blanca.
Have children write the sentence again to show the past. Then write the sentence to show the future. Have children underline the verb in each sentence.
Have children write two sentences telling how Rosa and Blanca can help their mother. Have children use verbs to tell about the future. Underline the verbs.
Readers / Introduce the book American Hero Day. Read the title and look at the picture on the cover.
Name some heroes that you know about?
Preview the reader by talking about the pictures and naming the labeled items.
Review the high frequency words that appear in this book: theirand many.
Introduce these key words from the book. hero(pg 1) mask(pg. 2) save(pg. 3) and borrow(pg. 4)
Read the book aloud to students as they follow along. Pause to verify comprehension and to explain unfamiliar concepts.
After pages2- 3 ask the students:
What problem do the second graders have? A cat has ruined many of their
mask of famous Americans. They do not have time to make new ones.
After pages 4 – 5 ask:
How does the class solve the problem. A child in the class remembers that
another school had Hero Day. The class is able to borrow the other school’s
mask.
After pages 6-8 ask:
Why does the class need the masks? They need the masks to play the parts
of famous American heroes. The children’s parents would come to see.
Reread - Have students reread the book together as a group.
