Needs and Wants

Essential Standards / K.H.1.3 Explain the impact of how life events bring change (a new sibling, moving to a new house, a new job, a new school, etc).

Essential Question:
What life events bring change into the home? (new baby, new school)
How does your family meet your needs and wants? / Social Studies Goals:

I can compare my new school to the old school.
I can compare my parent’s new job to their old job.

Tasks for Lesson

Engage—What tasks will “hook” students and uncover what they know and think about the concept? / Activity: Read books about adding new baby to the family, being a big brother or sister, etc. (Elmo is a big brother.) Retell story and have students draw their favorite part of the book.
Explore/Explain—What tasks will encourage students to observe, question, and investigate the concepts and explain concepts in their own words? / Allow students to make a graph of their family members and share with the class how our families are alike/different.
Elaborate—What experimental inquiry, investigative projects, problem solving, and decision-making tasks will help students apply their new labels, definitions, explanations, and skills? / Allow students to collaborate how their life events brought about change (with a new sibling, moving to a new house, new job, new school, etc.). Collaborate how families needs and wants are a likes/different.
Evaluate—What formative assessments will ensure that learning is occurring? / If students can recognize the needs and wants of other with out help. If they can recognize the difference between needs and wants.
Differentiation—What tasks will challenge students and support those who need additional help? / Observe students in different setting to see if they interact with other students with similar background.
