Unit 3: Colonization and Settlement Notes

*The effect that European settlement in the New World had on Native Americans was that many Native Americans died from new diseases and lost the lands they had settled.

*The most profitable export of the Jamestown settlement was tobacco.

*The geographic difference of Plymouth being farther north of the equator than Jamestown is that Plymouth has a colder climate than Jamestown.

*Europeans left their countries and came to the New World for religious freedom. Religious freedom is an example of a pull factor.

*Some European countries were overpopulated. This led Europeans to leave their countries. In this example, overpopulation is an example of a push factor.

*Because of fertile land and a long growing season, plantations in the 13 colonies developed in the South or Southern Colonies.

*Agriculture (farming) was more important in the Southern colonies than in the New England colonies because in the Southern colonies the climate was warmer.

*The colony most influenced by the Quakers was Pennsylvania.

*Coastal location was an important geographic feature that contributed to the settlement of the New England and Middle colonies because it allows for transportation by ships.

*Jobs were a shortage in Europe and this was a push factor from Europe because it drove the European people out of their countries.

*The colony of Jamestown was established along the James River, on a peninsula. The purpose for this was for protection from Spanish ships.

* The Pilgrims affected the lives of the American Indians because they wanted to take land away from the American Indians.

*The Mayflower Compact is BEST described as a set of rules to govern the Pilgrims.

*Anne Hutchinson was forced out of the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of her religious teachings.

* Roger Williams founded Rhode Island as a place of free worship because he was banished by the Puritans. (banish means to force someone to leave).

*The Spanish had some negative interactions with American Indians; one negative interaction was slavery.

* The economic activity in New England that is agricultural is farming. (agriculture means to farm or have a farm)

* William Penn received a charter to start a new colony in 1681. He made the colony a safe place for Quakers, a religious group that was not wanted in England. They practiced religious freedom in their colony and they had made peace with the Native Americans. They believed their city had brotherly love.

*Be able to identify the regions of the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies on a North American map.

*Colonists in New England settled much closer to each other than in the South because they depended on each other for goods and services.

* An important export of the southern colonies was indigo.

*The colonists considered it important to write the Mayflower Compact because they knew they would all have to work together if they were to survive in the new World.

* The Middle Colonies were called the Breadbasket of Colonial America because they grew an abundance of wheat and corn.

* In the late 1400’s and early 1500’s, the main reason for European voyages of exploration was to find new trade routes to China and the East Indies.

*The Mayflower Compact is best described as a document about how the colony would govern itself.

*The main reason the Pilgrims left England to found Plymouth Colony was that they wanted to be able to worship in their own way.

*Life in the colony might have been different if the colonists had not written the Mayflower Compact because people would have had no laws to govern them. This would have caused chaos among the people, there would be no sense of order, and people would have done whatever they wanted because they would follow their own rules which would have caused problems in the colony.
