High Frequency

Review high frequency words. Divide into groups of two. Give each group two sets of words (ELL Teaching Guide page 4). Have each group shuffle cards and place the words face down in front of them. Play Memory with the words. Each student needs to say the word as they pick the word. When a match is found, the student who found the match must use the word in a sentence.
Reading Comprehension / Today we are going to be talking about the characters in the poster. Let’s look
at the poster. Who can tell me how many characters (people) are in the
poster? There are eight people and one dog in the poster.
Let’s pretend we can hear what they are saying to one another. What do you
think the children playing in the water might be saying? (Make sure answers
are answered in complete sentences.
Model: This is so much fun. I am glad you had this idea. We should invite the
boy in the door to come down and play with us.
What do you think the two women are talking about?
What do you think the man in the suit is thinking? What will he say to the
children?
Grammar and Writing / Sentences
Review the definition of a sentence.
A sentence is a group of words that tell a complete idea. The words are in an
order that makes sense. A sentence begins with a capital letter. Many
sentences end with a period (.)
Have students write a complete sentence telling about the characters in the poster.
Model:
The children are having fun in the water.
The women are talking to each other.
The man is going to work.
Readers / Reread the readerOff to School We Go. Have students respond to the questions on the inside back cover. Talk about it.
The children in the city see buildings, stores, and busy streets. The child in
the country sees fields, a truck, trees, and plants.
The season is fall. I know because the leaves are falling off the trees and
Pumpkins are growing.
