Sample Problems / Learning Tools / Resources
BIN1: A Number Tells How many or how much
BIN3: There are many equivalent representations for a number or numerical relationship. Each representation may emphasize something different about that number relationship.
Big Ideas K-3 (pg 27-34)
Numeration Principles
1. We group in tens for convenience so that we need only 10 digits (0 to 9) to represent all numbers
2. Patterns are inherent in our numeration system because each place value is 10 times the value of the place to the right
3. A number has many different forms. For example 23 is 2 tens and 3 ones, or 23 ones
4. A place value system requires a symbol for a place holder which is 0. For example: to know the difference between 30 and 3.
5.You can compare numbers when they are written in standard, or symbolic form. / base ten

2m11 – represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 50, using a variety of tools; / e.g., ten frames, base ten materials, number lines, hundreds charts and hundreds carpets / Nelson Chapter 2, Lessons 4, 5, 6, Chapter Task

2m12 – read and print in words whole numbers to twenty, using meaningful contexts / e.g., storybooks, posters, signs / Nelson Chapter 2, Lessons 1, 2
2m14: determine, using concrete materials, the ten that is nearest to a given two-digit number, and justify the answer / e.g. use counters or ten frames to determine that 47 is closer to 50 than to 40 / Nelson Chapter 2, Lessons 3, 7
2m21 – locate whole numbers to 100 on a number line and on a partial number line that goes from 34 to 41 / e.g. locate 37 on a partial number line that goes from 34 to 41 / Nelson Chapter 2, Lesson 2
