UNIMARC Authorities Change Proposal 2015/9
Date of proposal: / June 14, 2015
Source of proposal: / Ufficio Ricerca Fondi Musicali
Istituto Centrale per il Catalogo Unico, Rome
IAML Sub-commission on UNIMARC
Type of proposal: /
Field(s) / Subfield(s) affected: / 223 (new field).
423 (new field)
523 (new field)
Content of proposal: / Create a new field for name of character in performance-related resources.
Rationale for proposal: / Detail list of characters in performance-related works and expressions and link character names with names of performers.
Comments: / Many performance-related resources (notably recordings and librettos) contain lists of performers, associated with characters. In older resources these are particularly valuable data from the scholarly and historical point of view, besides being important identification sources for anonymous operatic excerpts.
These performers and characters are associated to works and expressions.
The structure of UNIMARC/A requires that equivalent variant and related field 423 and 523 be adopted.
History/status: / New
Revised according to remarks at the IAML congress, Antwerp, July 17, 2014.
Presented as U/B 623, 2015/9 to the PUC in March 2015, discussed by PUC March 31, 2015 and postponed, awaiting a proposal for UNIMARC/A (this proposal).
Presented at informal PUC meeting and arranged accordingly to observations received (see minutes of PUC meeting in Cape Town), and FRBR-LRM draft.

223AUTHORIZED ACCESS POINT – CHARACTER

Field Definition

This field contains a structured access point for the name and other details relating to a character of performance-related works and expressions (e.g. sound or video recordings, movies, librettos or theater programs, scores) as well as information allowing the field to be linked for processing purposes to the name(s) of the associated performer(s).

Occurrence

Optional. Repeatable when more than one character appears in the resource.

Indicators

Indicator 1 specifies the type of name:

The first indicator specifies whether the character name is a proper name or a generic or collective term.

0 Unnamed character: the name is a generic term for a fictitious person

1 Proper named character for a fictitious person

2 Collective named characters for a generic gathering

3 Collective name for a family

4 Collective name for a corporate body

# No information provided

Indicator 2 specifies the way the name is entered:

The second indicator specifies whether the name is entered under the first occurring name (forename) or in direct order or whether it is entered under a surname, family name, patronymic or equivalent, usually with inversion.

0 Name entered under forename or in direct order

1 Name entered under surname (family name, patronymic, etc.) (EX 8)

# No information provided

Subfields

$a Entry element

The portion of the name (EX 1, 3), the generic term (EX 5, 6, 7), or the collective term (EX 6), used as the entry element in the heading; that part of the name by which the name is entered in ordered lists. Mandatory. Not repeatable.

$b Part of name other than entry element

The remainder of the name, used when the entry element is a surname or family name (EX 8). It contains forenames and other given names. The form of name indicator should be set to 1 when this subfield is used. Not repeatable. (EX 9)

$c Additions to name of character

Any additions to name of character which do not form an integral part of the name itself including titles, epithets, indications of office or relationships with other characters (EX 1, 2). Repeatable for second or subsequent occurrences of such additions.

$d Relationship with other characters

The relationship with another character in the work being described (EX 1, 2). Repeatable if more relationships with other characters are declared.

$e Voice range or other information in textual form

The voice range or other information on the character (e.g. the fact that it does not speak), in textual form. Terms may be transcribed as they appear on the sources (EX 1, 5), or reference terms associated with codes for medium of performance in field 146 $b-$f pos. 2-7 may be used as a controlled vocabulary. Repeatable when a character is performed by different voices, and for collective names.

$f Voice range or other information in coded form

A three-letter code indicates the voice range or other information on the character (e.g. the fact that it does not speak). Codes are taken from code list for field 146 $b-$f pos. 2-7 (EX 1, 3, 6), with one or more extensions from pos. 5 (EX 6). Repeatable when a character is performed by different voices, and for collective names (EX 6).

$6 Interfield linking data

Data required to link the field with a 2XX field containing the name of the performer for the character (EX 2, 3, 4) and/or to other occurrences of field 223 (which may be needed if the same character changes name during the work). More instances of $6 may occur when in one or more expressions a character is performed by more than one performer (EX 10). Repeatable.

See specification of Control Subfields above. Linking explanation code will always have the value ‘z’ = Other.

$7 Script of cataloguing and script of the base access point

See specification of Control Subfields above.

$8 Language of cataloguing and language of the base access point

See specification of Control Subfields above.

Notes on Field Contents

This field contains the preferred form of a character name listed in a performance-related resource (notably audio or video recordings, movies, opera scores, plots and librettos), linked, if relevant at work or expression level, with associated performer(s).
