The Mission

of Sierra Nevada Children’s Choir is to provide excellent choral music education, training, and performing experience in a joyful environment.

Our Vision

We envision choirs for children in grades K-12, which provide varied training and performance opportunities according to the abilities of the participants. Central to this goal is the future establishment of one or more training choirs to provide children with the opportunity to learn the skills necessary for admission into the other choirs.

Goals and Objectives

  • To provide for talented young singers an advanced choral experience.
  • To supplement the musical training offered in Northern Nevada’s school music programs.
  • To study and perform a variety of choral music in the tradition of American and world composers, both secular and sacred.
  • To improve choir performance and personal growth by teaching music concepts such as melody, harmony and rhythm, and skills such as music reading, vocal production, choral technique and cooperation.
  • To encourage the life-long learning and enjoyment of music.

Programs Works closely with both conductors to create programs for all performances. Types, researches, and arranges for printing of programs. Recruits volunteers to distribute programs at concerts.

Tickets Chair/Team Works closely with treasurer. Prints tickets, organizes distribution of tickets to singers for pre-sales, collects money/tickets from singers after pre-sales. Organizes ticket sales and ticket collection at all concerts.

Operations Manager/Team Works closely with both conductors. Plans for all special needs for concerts. These may include, but are not limited to, risers, music stands, reserved seating for singers, parent helpers for each choir, lights, sound system, piano rental and tuning.

Concert Reception Organization Contacts families to solicit food/drinks for receptions after concerts. In charge of reception preparations/clean up.

Volunteer Opportunities

As a not-for profit organization, SNCC depends on volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are numerous and diverse. Each family is asked to volunteer 10 hours per year to ensure that SNCC grows and prospers! There are opportunities to sign up to volunteer at the parent meeting during the first fall rehearsal. Also watch for opportunities to be posted in the SNCC newsletter and via email.

Attendance Monitor Arrives 5 minutes early to all rehearsals and performances to take attendance. Remains in rehearsals to be of assistance to the conductor as needed. For Dolce, remains after rehearsal until all children are picked up.

Uniforms Assists uniform chairperson in all matters related to, uniforms. Attends each performance and performs a uniform check before each choir sings.

Music Librarian Stamps and numbers all new music. Distributes music packets at the start of each semester. Collects, sorts, and puts away music at the end of each semester. Maintains an organized music library and database. Notifies singers and directors of missing music.

Newsletter Assembles, prints, and distributes a monthly newsletter to all SNCC families (this may be done via email).

Fundraising Chair/Team Works closely with the treasurer of the board. Organizes and carries out fundraisers for the organization

She is Director of Music at St. John’s Presbyterian Church where she conducts two youth choirs and two adult choirs, Sheis the accompanist for Bella Voce women’s ensemble, and has served as choral music teacher at Wooster and Damonte Ranch High Schools.

Uniforms

All singers must pay a $75 uniform rental fee during their first year of participation with SNCC, and $25 each following year. For the 2010-11 season only, all singers who do not posses the current uniform style will need to pay the $75 fee as we transition into new uniforms. These fees cover the purchase, hemming, and final cleaning of uniforms, and larger sizes as needed. Girls will be supplied with a dress, and boys with a shirt, pants, and tie. All uniforms must be returned on the day of the final concert, immediately following the concert. A $75 fine will be charged for uniforms that are not returned or damaged beyond repair. In addition to the rental uniforms, girls must purchase black ballet flats, and boys must purchase black belt, black dress shoes, and black socks.

All singers are required to purchase an SNCC polo shirt for $20. Orders for the polo will be taken at the parent meeting in the fall.

Tuition

There is a non-refundable tuition as determined by the Board on an annual basis. Tuition is spent on SNCC operating expenses, including, but not limited to, music, conductor and accompanist salaries, publicity, and performance costs. Participation in SNCC is a year commitment and tuition for the year is due even if the singer drops out of the choir at any time during the year. Non-payment of fees may jeopardize a singer’s continued participation in the choir. Annual tuition for 2010-11 is $300 and may be paid in full by September 16, or according to the following installment schedule.

Tuition Schedule

September 16$100

November 4$100

February 3$100

A 10% discount will be given to the 2nd child, and all subsequent children in each family. Scholarships are available based on financial need and may be awarded to cover up to 80% of tuition costs. Applications are available from the board treasurer. Following a one-week grace period, a $5 late fee will be charged for each week that tuition is late.

Payments may be placed in the payment basket at rehearsal or mailed to:

Attendance

The quality of rehearsals requires that each singer be present and on time. Singers should plan to arrive 5-10 minutes early so that they can check in with the attendance monitor, be seated, and be ready to begin promptly. Attendance will be taken at each rehearsal and performance. Not more than two absences from rehearsals are permitted per term. Three tardies will be counted as one absence. More than two absences per term will result in probation or dismissal from SNCC.

Performances

Singers are required to participate in the main concerts on December 11 and May 21, the UNR concert on December 7, and the American International Choral Festival performances May 4-8. Instructions for arrival times will be given closer to the performance dates. There will also be performances that come up throughout the season that will be accepted if a majority of singers are available. It is expected that every effort will be made to attend these performances

Code of Conduct

All members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that creates a favorable impression of SNCC. Possession or use of any drugs, alcohol, or tobacco products is illegal for minors and constitutes grounds for dismissal. Sierra Nevada Children’s Choirreserves the right to terminate choir participation and tuition and/or tour payments will not be refunded.

Choir members are expected to:

  • Always be alert and practice active listening
  • Practice the “Golden Rule”
  • Use good self-control
  • Take care of the music, folder, CD and choir uniform
  • Help clean up after rehearsals and events
  • Have fun sharing their best quality effort with the choir
  • Listen to the rehearsal CD often, allowing choir rehearsals to focus on detail rather than learning the music
  • Know the boundaries of where they are allowed to be at a rehearsal or performance location
  • Always remember that they are “Music Ambassadors” for our city and our choir. They should conduct themselves in a professional and courteous manner.

Taping/Filming Policy

No family videotaping or still cameras are allowed during performances. Cameras distract performers and detract from the professionalism of the performance. CD recordings of performances will be made available when possible

Membership Requirements

School Fine Arts Program Participation

Singers are expected to participate in their school’s fine arts program concurrent with their SNCC membership, where available. It is preferred that they participate in the choral program at their school, but if that is not possible due to conflicts, participation in another musical ensemble at their school is acceptable. SNCC members should be leaders in their school music program.

Music

All music is the property of SNCC. Music and a folder are provided for each singer. Singers are required to bring their music folder to all rehearsals. A sharpened pencil with an eraser should be kept with the music at all times. All markings in the music should be done lightly, in pencil, and only at the direction of the conductor. Never fold or roll music. Music will be collected at the end of each term. Fees for lost or damaged music will be charged.
