Understanding the media

TASK: Choose 3 different forms of media on the same issue, from different points in time. You might like to choose one of anyof the following:

Letter to the EditorBlogFeature articleEditorialCommentary/opinion piece

Meme or cartoonA short video clip/news segment (e.g. 60 Minutes, A Current Affair, YouTube)

You should choose an issue that has developed over the course of time, and examine the changes in how the event/person/product has been portrayed. Your presentation should be supported by multimodal elements. This may comprise of a PowerPoint or Prezi including screen shots of articles, a video clip and dot points of your key observations.

In your presentation you should:

  • Deliver background information about when/how this issue first emerged in the media, using your first source. E.g. A feature article breaking the news the Bali 9 have been arrested.
  • Identify and explore the language features of this text, commenting on how the author positions their audience to view this event/person/product in a particular way.
  • Introduce your second source (this should be something published or created at a later date). Comment on any similarities or differences in this author’s approach. This means analysing the language, tone and visual elements of both sources and pointing out changes in how the media has portrayed this event/person/issue.
  • Introduce your third source (this should be the most recent of your three sources). Comment on how the author’s language, perspective and style is different to the previous two texts.
  • Tie up your presentation by reiterating your main points. In doing so, you should compare the purpose and effectiveness of the three texts, outlining how an audience is now positioned to think, feel or act.
