About us: The UK Sri Lanka Trauma Group (UKSLTG) is a charity dedicated to mental health development and capacity building in Sri Lanka. The charity was formed by a group of expatriate Sri Lankan and British mental health professionals who came together to find a way of helping Sri Lanka respond to the war related trauma in the country. The group they formed became registered as the UKSLTG Charity in 1999 and through the help of a grant from CAFOD and King's College London they went on todevelop our Sri Lankan partner organisation, Samutthana (The King’s College London Resource Centre for Trauma, Displacement and Mental Health).
Our aims: After enduring the civil war conflict for over 30 years and the devastations of the 2004 South-East Asia tsunami, the repercussions on the mental health of the population are still emerging. Despite the high level of mental health need in the Sri Lankan population, there is a shortage of trained mental health professionals, at present there is only one psychiatrist for every 500,000 people. This deficit is exacerbated by geographical inequity, with the majority of professionals located in urban settings close and around Colombo. Unfortunately this means that areas with the greatest need (Northern and Eastern districts) are the most deprived in terms of access to mental health care.
Through Samutthana, the UKSLTG volunteers work all over the country to promote mental health awareness, skills training and policy development as well as peace building and conflict resolution. We take both a top-down and bottom-up approach in terms of our training model whereby we train skilled mental health professionals as well as grassroots community based organisations. Over the past two decades the UKSLTG and Samutthana have provided support to many Sri Lankan organisations through the training of over 10,000 frontline workers including: Mental Health Professionals (Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Nurses, Occupational Therapists etc), Social Workers, Teachers, Religious Leads, NGO Workers and Volunteers. We do not do any direct clinical work as our aim is to help enhance and develop the skills of the Sri Lankan people who have an interest in Mental Health in order to increase their confidence as well as ensure sustainability with the projects we work with.
About the role: The UKSLTG is currently run by a board of volunteers that form our Executive Committee. The role of the UKSLTG is to recruit and supervise volunteers as well as support the work carried out by Samutthana staff by sourcing finance for specific projects through grant applications and fundraising. As Samutthana’s capactiy has grown, so has the need to establish a UK base. More recently we were kindly given a small grant from the Bromley Trust to help develop the UKSLTG’s infrastructure. We are therefore hoping to appoint our first UK paid member of staff initially on a 12-month contract. This is an exciting new role that has the scope to be extended. We hope that part of this role will involve the development and implementation of the UKSLTG financing strategy. The strategy will aim to secure and manage an adequate, sustainable and predictable base to support both the UKSLTG charity’s infrastructure as well as our projects based in Sri Lanka.
