U13 Open Singles

Hi everyone – please see below the report and results of the NBA Super Series event held on 24th March 2013 at Ashington Leisure Centre

U13 Open Singles

18 entrants (boys and girls) played in 3 groups of 6, with the group winners and best runner up going through to contest semis and finals.

Group A

Typically tenacious performances from Adam Fawcus (Berwick), Sam Carruthers (North Tyneside Badminton Academy), Daniel Harrison (Tyneside Sharks) and James Arnold (John Watt Academy) made this a highly competitive group. The key match in the group however was between Alex Jay and Lexi Howard (both Tyneside Sharks), with Alex just clinching a tight match.

Group B

A combination luck of the draw, no-shows and last minute entrants left Andrew Hogg (Duns) single-handedly taking on Andrew Howard, Amelia Foo, Yuri Hionidou, Arham Ansari and Arif Alam, all from the Tyneside Sharks. Despite a typically strong challenge from Andrew Howard, Andrew Hogg went through to the semi-finals unbeaten

Group C

The combined challenges between Melvyn Cherian (Tyneside Sharks), Matthew Huxtable (Morpeth Riverside), Jack Smith (John Watt Academy), and AlaapSubramonia (Tyneside Sharks) provided the spectators with a highly enjoyable set of matches, but the shoot out for top spot was between Emily Harrison (Tyneside Sharks) and Will Richardson (John Watt Academy). Emily went through to the semi-final by the narrowest of margins, with Will’s effort earning him a semi-final sport as best group runner-up

Semi-finals

Emily Harrison (Tyneside Sharks) vs Alex Jay (Tyneside Sharks) 21 – 11

Will Richardson (Tyneside Sharks) vs Andrew Hogg (Duns) 21 – 20

U15 Open Singles

The U15 entrants first competed against the U18’s, then played their own mini-tournament. Well done to all 3 players who rose to the challenge of taking on older (and in some cases more experienced) opponents

Winner- Ross Donaldson (Whitley Chapel)

Runner up - Matthew Stewart (North Tyneside Badminton Academy)

3rd Place¨- Chris Anderson (John Watt Academy)

U18 Open Singles

10 entrants played in two groups of 5, with the winners and runners up contesting the semis and finals.

Group Y

Thomas Scrivens’ (West End Cobras) physicality and intensity proved the decisive factor in this group, although not without a significant challenge from Steve Brown (North Tyneside Badminton Academy) and Matthew Peart (John Watt Academy)

Group Z

Nathan Simpson (John Watt Academy), one of the best supporters of the Super Series event, topped the group, but not before withstanding a typically robust challenge from Daniel Wight (North Tyneside Badminton Academy). Special mention here to Ilia Hionidou (Tyneside Sharks) who took on the boys single-handed and made significant improvements to her play as the day progressed.

Semi-finals

Thomas Scrivens (West End Cobras) vs Daniel Wight (North Tyneside Badminton Academy)

21 – 10, 21 - 20

Matthew Peart (John Watt Academy) vs Nathan Simpson (John Watt Academy)

Boys’ team event

In the team championships, based on % of boys singles wins for 2012/13, 3 teams qualified for the final places by fielding a minimum of 3 boys in each of the 4 events. Tyneside Sharks topped the league with a win % of 56%, largely due to the outstanding performances of their U13 players. Runner-up spot was clinched by the John Watt Academy (51%), with their U18 boys contributing greatly, enabling them to overtake last season’s champions, the North Tyneside Badminton Academy (47%).

Winner – Tyneside Sharks (56%)

Runner-up – John Watt Academy (51%)

Third Place - North Tyneside Badminton Academy (47%)

Several other clubs put in good performances, but had events where they had fewer than 3 entrants so were ineligible for the final placings.

3 events: West End Cobras (48%)

2 events: Morpeth Riverside (45%)

2 events: Ponteland and Walbottle (44%)

1 event: Berwick (31%)

1 event: Whitley Chapel (20%)

Girl’s Team Event

The girls event was won by the Tyneside Sharks, who were the only club to consistently enter more than 3 girls. Praise should be given however to all the girls that entered, recognising the opportunity to take on the boys as part of the long term development of their game.

Thanks you to all the players, volunteers and parents who contributed to the 4 events during the year. We look forwards to seeing you next season.

6)Ponteland and Walbottle 44%

7) Berwick 31%

8) Whitley Chapel 20%

The table could change dramatically on the final day!

Girls

Tyneside Sharks head the girls, with their participants achieving a 57% win percentage.
