Air conditioning was first used in the USA in the early 1900s to make factories more productive, and it soon spread into public places. Houses became lower and more private, commercial spaces became larger and more combined, and cities stretched further outward. Once AC use became common, it also allowed people to live in different areas of the USA, especially the hotter southern states. Nowadays, it is used around the world to help businesses be more competitive and to show their success. Unfortunately, AC uses a great deal of energy, which has significant environmental impact, but many countries are working together to rectify the situation.
