Urban 4-H Youth Club Facilitator

About urban 4-h

The Urban Youth Development Office (Urban 4-H) is a part of the University of Minnesota Extension Center for Youth Development. Urban 4-H works with and on behalf of youth living in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the surrounding communities to build high-quality, engaging programming for urban youth to drive their current and future success by experiencing mastery, building 21st century leadership skills, and developing a sense of global citizenship.

description of club Facilitator Position

The Urban 4-H Youth Club Facilitator will lead learning activities and recruit adult mentors for our youth club at Emma’s Place, a transitional housing facility in Maplewood (2163 Van Dyke Street Maplewood, MN 55109). The Emma’s Place 4-H Club is one of six “4-H Tech Wizards” clubs funded by our Minnesota 4-H Mentoring Program grant. This grant engages young people in weekly club sessions in a “group mentoring” scenario, where one adult mentor is present for every four youth in the program. Content is focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) but based on youth interest, and all learning helps youth connect their interests to higher education and careers. Mentors interact with the youth as mentors in this weekly group setting, but also engage with youth outside of the club setting through family phone calls or home visits. The Youth Club Facilitator also acts a mentor for the youth in the club, but plays the lead in planning and facilitating the learning activities during the club meetings. Emma’s Place 4-H Club has youth in grades 3-10, split into two groups that will meet at the same time; this position will be primarily responsible for facilitating learning with grades 6 and up, but may need to work with the younger youth as well. The Youth Club Facilitator also helps to recruit other adult mentors in order to meet the 4:1 ratio of youth to adults, and s/he plays the lead on making sure that those other mentors understand their role in helping to facilitate youth learning.

Work hours include time delivering learning activities during the weekly club meetings (Mondays from 4-6), time planning and developing these activities, time helping to recruit and meet with other adult mentors, and time for training and other professional development.
