Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Zechariah 12:10-11; 13:1; Galatians 3:26-29;

Luke 9:18-24 [96C]

“Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, ‘Who do the crowds say that I am?’… ‘But who do you say that I am?’ Peter said in reply, ‘The Christ of God.’ Then he said to all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”

It is not uncommon for people to care about their reputation. We have witnessed politicians, celebrities and athletes fall from grace. Their fame has become sullied and sadly their lives changed. Other heroes did what was right and just and have remained special in the minds of others: a pilot landing a plane in the Hudson River, a firefighter rescuing someone from a burning building, a teacher assisting the student most in need. Jesus’ question was not how others felt about Him, but how those closest to Him think and respond.

The same question is asked of me as I read these words. Who is Jesus for me, today, at this moment? I can give Son of God, my Savior, and my Redeemer. He wants me to answer from my heart, as I speak of Him as friend, confidant, and model.

Because of this conviction I wish to say ‘yes’ to Jesus (denying self), take up my daily cross (service to those around me and in need) and follow Him, both to Calvary and resurrection glory. It is then that I reflect the Person of Jesus and He can be found through me.

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

The collection for June 13 was $5,723. Thank you.

Dear Heavenly Father,
We thank you for our earthly fathers, those to whom you have entrusted the responsibility to provide loving protection of their families and guidance of their children. We thank you, also, for our priests and bishops, whose spiritual fatherhood is so vital to the faith of your people.
We ask your blessing on all those to whom you have entrusted fatherhood. May your Holy Spirit constantly inspire them with justice and mercy, wisdom and strength, fidelity and self-giving love.
May they receive your Grace abundantly in this earthly life, and they look forward to eternal joy in your presence in the life to come.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen

Summer Ushers Needed

During the summer months there is an urgent need for Ushers/Ministers of Hospitality. Please consider volunteering for a Saturday or Sunday service during these months. Ask a friend to work with you. It’s easy and so important. All you have to do is arrive one half hour before Mass begins. Greet everyone, pass out Mass Program. Plan to approach two parishioners to bring up the gifts of Bread and Wine early, as you greet the incoming. It may be nece ssary for you to ask 4 others to help with the collections, which occurs immediately after intentions are read. After the Mass ended please pass out the Church Bulletin. There will be a sign up on the table for the summer weekends. Thank you for volunteering. When Mass ends, say good-bye and hand out the Newsletter as parishioners leave.
