TUBERCULOSIS COORDINATOR

DEFINITION

This position requires a responsible professional to work in the development, coordination and implementation of efforts to decrease TB in Dane County through the provision of providing latent TB medications, providing directly observed therapy, or DOT, and prompt, accurate screening and diagnosis. The employee serves as a lead worker for day-to-day program management; works with the Supervisor on quality assurance; and serves as a specialized consultant on TB. This person also coordinates the TB Editorial team. Under the general supervision of a Public Health Nursing Supervisor, the incumbent exercises judgment and discretion in meeting program objectives

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists with developing, recommending, implementing, and evaluating TB program objectives, policies and procedures. Monitor guidance from the CDC and the State TB program to assure that appropriate changes are made in PHMDC TB protocol Responsible for orienting and training new TB staff on policies and procedures; providing TB skin test placement training to new nursing staff and ensure that TB program staff are up to date in TB protocols. Monitor and evaluate chart auditing effectiveness, making recommendations to the program supervisor. Will need to communicate regularly with the TB Supervisor about program and TB nurse case manager performance and work with the supervisor to develop TB program quality improvement strategies. Assist with the development of Cohort Reviews (quarterly basis) in collaboration with the TB Program Supervisor and State TB Program. Work with the TB Editorial team to review charts (chart audits) and implement chart auditing among TB nurses. Is responsible for providing TB case management consultation, and preparing and presenting reports or presentations as requested by PHMDC staff and community partners. Under supervision and in partnership with the TB Supervisor, will be responsible for developing and maintaining effective working relationships with community health care providers and community agencies, and will need to attend various meetings to represent the PHMDC TB program. Will also work as a TB nurse case manager, providing public health nursing services in homes, clinics and other site and will assume responsibility for a case load of TB clients.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a college or university accredited by the National League of Nursing for public health nursing and one year of public health nursing experience, which included the prevention, surveillance and control of communicable diseases, including TB.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Advanced knowledge of public health nursing principles and practices; knowledge of community resources and how to utilize them; ability to work independently and assess own practice; excellent interpersonal relations ability; ability to collect and organize data, make meaningful findings from such data and related reports; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Knowledge of TB program objectives, TB diagnosis and screening methods and standards of care for TB clients. Ability to work with clients of different cultures, work with a variety of community partners and providers, use problem solving skills to effectively resolve program/client issues and to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.

Special requirements: Possession of or eligibility for a Wisconsin’s driver’s license and access to reliable personal motor vehicle transportation.
