Trustee Reappointed to the Board of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment today announced the reappointment of Patricia Henton to theBoard ofTrusteesof the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).

Patricia Hentonwas first appointed to the Board of Trustees in 2010. As a former CEO of an Non Departmental Public Body (Scottish Environment Protection Agency), former Director of Environment and Business at the Environment Agency, and as a Board Member of the Coal Authority, Patricia brings considerable management experience from operating at a senior level. As a current trustee of the British Trust for Ornithology and former Council Member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, she has a clear understanding of the charitable sector. Finally she has 13 years’ experience in the environmental management consultancy business and sound knowledge of corporate governance.

Welcoming the re-appointment, Sir Muir Russell, Chair of the Trustees, said - "I am glad that Tricia Henton has accepted re-appointment. She brings a wealth of experience of environmental policy and a strong personal commitment to the Garden. I and my colleagues look forward to working with her on the challenges we face in the years ahead.”

This appointment will be for four years and will run from 1 November 2014 to 31 October 2018. Trustee reappointments are non-remunerated. The appointee holds one other Ministerial appointment, as a Board member of the Coal Authority and receives £10,000 per annum for a time commitment of three days per month.

The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is a Non-Departmental Public Body established under the National Heritage (Scotland) Act 1985 and is primarily funded by the Scottish Government. Its mission is " exploring and explaining the world of plants for a better future " and its primary functions are: science, horticulture, education and information and visitor services.

The main purpose of the RBGE Board is to provide effective leadership, direction, support and guidance to the organisation and to ensure that the policies and priorities of the Scottish Ministers (and the Scottish Government) are implemented.

The members of the Board have collective responsibility for overseeing the RBGE and pursuing the statutory remit as described above. The Board is responsible for agreeing the organisation’s strategy; ensuring that the highest standards of governance are complied with; and is advised by the Regius Keeper who is not a member of the Board.

This reappointment is regulated by the Commissioner for Ethical Standards in Public Life in Scotland.

All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. No political activity has been declared by the appointee.
